swinging while hanging?

swinging while hanging?

Does anyone “swing” the weights while they hang? This morning I swung the weights in a circular motion (think of hula hooping without the hula hoop) and it felt great. It broke up the monotony of hanging straight down and definitely felt like it was hitting a lot of areas I wouldn’t otherwise.

Just curious to see if others have done the same thing.

Start/April 2011: BPEL - 6.75" / NBPEL - 6.00" / BEG - 5.125 / Mid Shaft - 4.75 / Glans 4.5"

Current/August 8 2011: BPEL 7.25" / NBPEL - 6.375" / BEG - 5.625" / Mid Shaft - 5.00" / Glans - 4.875"

Goals: NBPEL - 8.25" / Mid Shaft EG - 6.00"

I do this but only with low weight, after I do all the hanging sets.

Starting stats: 6.4" / 5.6" Current Stats: 7.4" / 5.8" Short term goal: 7" / 6" Long term goal: 8" / 6.5"

Do you feel like it has helped? If so, in what way?

All the time. I believe this greatly helps with growth because it is loosening the ligs. I swing back and forth and side to side. Side to side is far easier, but I feel front to back is more effective at stretching the ligs out.

Thanks, I’ll have to start doing this more often!

I think it depends if you use high or low weight while doing this….using low weight I think it “loosens” the ligament, but if you do this with high weight, I think it’s a greater chance of toughening(which we don’t want). This is my gut feeling.

What do you consider to be low weight? I’ve just started hanging, so I’m at 5 pounds.

I hang with about 10 lb so my perception of low weghit is about 3-5 lb.

Interesting theory. I would have to disagree to some extent. The only way the ligs would toughen up is if you are not consistently hanging every day and taking rest days in between. When you hang and swing, you are breaking down or wearing down the ligs, creating micro tears. The only way they will get tougher is if you let the previous days adhesions heal up. If you hang every day, you are keeping those ligs in a weakened state as well as pulling out the adhesions from yesterday, thereby creating more deformation.

The ONLY thing that toughens ligs is when they are significantly deformed, and heal. When any collagenous material is healed, the mechanism is laying down of more collagenous tissue, which makes the area stronger.

Other than disease, like scurvy, the only thing that weakens collagenous tissue is a lack of stress, which causes the tissues to atrophy.

So, if you want to gain, you will deform collagenous tissue, which will, over time, make the tissues you are further trying to deform stonger. The key is to keep stress on them, deforming them as quickly as possible, before they become stonger.

I know of no way that lighter weights will “loosen” ligs. Gains come from lengthening of the fibers, or seperating them altogether.

Interesting perspective. So it’s not good for me to hang Monday - Friday and take Saturday and Sunday off?

Not really, because it gives your body a chance to heal. And THAT is where the ligs will toughen. Even if you hang ONE set on Saturday and Sunday, do it. It will be enough to pull out the adhesions from the day before. We should look to hang no less than 10 hours a week in order to see gains.
