Homemade Mr. Fantastic Pumping

12

Hello everyone !

Well, for those who are willing to do a rudimentary device in form but quite efficient in the performance similar to my device, I am willing to give you guidance on how to build it with only the necessary money.

I do this for passion not for money, I would be happy if every one could try the “dynamic pumping” as I understand it, and have the emotions that gave it to me.

The device will not be a box but a connection of pipes, will not be comfortable to carry around, and needs in each cycle of the user’s hand will not be nice, but if you are handy with your hands it can work well.

For anyone who wants to try, ask your questions here and I will lead you :) .

Could you start a new thread for this please Mr. Fantastic. I think many would be interested in this and it deserves a place of it’s own.

I would LOVE to see your diagram! Thanks!

Hello sparkyx , the diagram is simple, need to connect all together with T connector .

I tell you what need : one vacuum pump , one meter of flexible hose , one T connector , battery / power supply for power the battery with switch for on/off , vacuum gauge , a needle for hand sewing :) .

But I also need to know the characteristics of the vacuum pump, voltage and flow , If you already have the material tell me and I’ll post a diagram to connect the whole.

The Mr. Fantastic Pumping

Hi Mr Fantastic! Yeah, just post the general set up here and that way anyone can see it and put it together if they choose. I have already set mine up, and its working great. I can set max and min vacuum settings and rate of change, all done with air lines and valves. I even connected it to my low vacuum aquarium pump ( so two vacuum pumps linked together.), so I can instantly switch from my low vacuum pump to my high vacuum pump without having to disconnect anything. I do have to do the timing by hand, that is put my finger over the end of a vacuum line and take it off to time the on and off cycles, otherwise max and minimum vacuum as well as rate of change happens automatically from the air valves.

After talking to Capernicus, I decided to experiment with low vacuum pumping (apx 5 in hg) for about 20 minutes, THEN do the higher vacuum dynamic pumping. So, with my set up, I can do both without having to change any of the settings. which makes it very easy. Because its all done with air valves, every time I need to change settings, I need to disconnect my cylinder and hook up a gauge to calibrate my vacuum, which is fine, if I only need to do it once to get my perimeters correct, but if I had to do it twice each session, too much of a hassle! Thats why your machine is really great, all that is simplified and automated (really brilliant piece of work!).

So, I would love to see how you have it set up, and let others see it who wish to give it a go. I will however say that your machine is truly a work of wonder and that the price is fair! Its just nice to have a cheap version for those unable to swing the cost of your unit right now.

Thanks!

Thanks sparkyx for all the work you’ve done :) .

Seeing the description of all the work you’ve done before, I hope that my example of how to do a “home made” will not be disappointed, I tried to pull off a simple thing but it works, and especially with a few things done.

As I said, you need a vacuum pump, pipe, a T connector, vacuum gauge, electrical switch / battery switch, or power supply, and a needle.

Below pictures of examples of connectors , any is right , pipe whatever is good as long it fits into the T connector and pump .

You have to do one important thing: a hole with a needle in the connector but only with the tip of the needle, the hole must be small almost microscopic, you have to use a very small needle as shown in the picture.

If the hole is too small during the tests try to expand if it is too large instead you have to use another T connector :D .

Mr Fantastic - you are very generous to share your knowledge with us here. I have read your posts and watched your video. Yes, you have made a very smart invention. I agree with SparkyX that your price is very reasonable with the parts you are using and engineering you have done.

On the other discussion thread “$15 electric vacuum pump…” we are discussing the valves that can be used (as SparkyX has mentioned above) but we still have to time the cycles manually. Your device is using the programmable digital pressure switch (DC voltage with DC vacuum pump).

Is your programmable digital pressure switch turning the vacuum pump on and off or is it regulating suction?

Questions on the commercial version should be done in the specific thread, I think.

In the following link I have assembled the device, the video quality is not high, but you can clearly see how to do it and how it works.

The Mr. Fantastic Pumping

Thanks Mr. Fantastic - you answered my question.

Mr Fantastic, can you tell us, what type and where to get the vacuum pump you are using?

It is the smallest vacuum pump I have ever seen! Try internet search for “mini vacuum pump” or “micro vacuum pump”. Try google images search for lots of pics.

I do not expect Mr Fantastic to give away all his secrets as he is selling the product he invented. He has been very generous to share so much information.

As we can see from the video (thanks Mr. Fantastic) the pump is cycled by powering on and off with the added benefit of saving battery power. For those of us who use AC line voltage pumps such as the aquarium pump, I suggest an alternative approach for consideration. How about using an electric solenoid valve controlled by a timer? The pump (vacuum source) stays on, the timer is adjusted to the cycling interval (for example, 15 seconds) and the timer activates a valve that bleeds the vacuum. Thoughts?
