Monstermandingo, you bring up a point that comes up from time to time, and it’s worth addressing.
Pumping by feel is not necessarily a good way to go about pumping. If you could do that safely and hit the same vacuum level from session to session, and keep the same vacuum level within a session that way, you wouldn’t need a gauge.
But pumping by feel has risks and downsides for just those reasons. It’s hard to know just how much vacuum you’re applying, how much vacuum you’re maintaining, and whether you are at a safe vacuum level for you.
And I don’t think that it is an accurate statement to say that if you can’t feel the vacuum, you aren’t going to gain from it. There are some who still prefer higher vacuum levels and claim good results from it. I think the more general conventional wisdom these days is that higher vacuum levels bring with them higher risk of injury, impaired EQ and discoloration, and do not necessarily bring any greater gains than pumping at lower vacuum levels.
Your mileage may vary.
