topical spironolactone for hairloss

topical spironolactone for hairloss

Hey guys I have been looking for a topical hair loss product to block DHT in my scalp so I didn’t have to take any medications to effect all DHT in my body. One body builder has mentioned topical spironolactone to me but that’s all he did, mentioned it. I have been searching around for information on it and thought I would throw up a thread about it and see if any of you guys have tried it and what do you think about it, and also inform you guys that such a thing exists in case you didn’t know.

Any idea where to buy this medication, or is it illegal to buy from the Internet?

I just did a Google search on spironolactone and there was a good response even a wickipedia. And it seemed some was for sale.

Might be worth a look to see what’s what.

I’ve tried it but but switched to a different product that already has a DHT blocker in it(Xandrox 15% Plus). I’ve seen pretty good results.

Here is the product page.

An update on this? I have never really read about topical Spironolactone before and am glad to see that there is a recent thread here for it! I saw that Dr Lee makes a 5% spiro lotion that you can supposedly use with minoxidil with minimal bad smell which seems to be the main problem. Has anyone here had any success using spiro instead of finasteride.

One thing I don’t understand is that it supposedly binds to the receptors before DHT does but wouldn’t this still mean that the follicle isn’t receiving the nutrients it needs? I found this article and read the abstract which kind of explains it a bit more but with no reference to its affect on the scalp obviously.

On a side note, has anyone used kirkland brand minoxidil?

If you can use with minoxidil and has minimal bad smell, it must not contain spironolactone. I don’t know how to answer your technical questions.

I ordered some spiro 5% cream from genhair and when it arrives I will let you guys know what I think of it, in the mean time I am using the Rogain foam that has minoxidil in it. I don’t know for sure if I have lost any hair yet I am just trying to take some precautions to keep from killing out any hair follicles while I am on a cycle of anabolic steroids.

If anything is wrong with how I am going about this please inform me :) . I have been on cycle for 6 weeks and my girl friend mentioned that she thought my hair was receding a bit more since I started, she may have just been paranoid because she knew the effect of elevated DHT from my cycle but at the moment I realized I didn’t want to take any chances because my self esteem I worked so hard to build up would be gone if I lost my hair (My head does not look pleasant bare, its really hideous).

So the Rogain is supposed to help regrow what you have lost so I am using it in case I have weakened some follicles to help bring them back to full life and then when the spiro cream arrives I will apply it to the areas I am worried about to hopefully block the effects of my elevated DHT until I come off my cycle, where I will then try to cycle off the spiro cream slowly to prevent any bizarre rebounds.

My main concern is that I may actually cause hair loss with this stuff which may or may not be possible I am just new to learning about hair loss and have a long way to go about understanding everything.

Topical Spiro is a pretty weak treatment to fight hair loss IMO. Not to mention that the smell and goopy base of the cream does not lead favorably to constant patient compliance. It’s not a BAD treatment, but I wouldn’t expect much from it.

The sad truth is, there are only really 3 things (that are easily attainable and affordable) that truly work in the majority of users: Finasteride, Minoxidil, and Nizoral Shampoo.

Now, I can understand how many people might not want to try Finasteride for fear of altering their hormones, and that’s cool. The stuff DOES work, most people WON’T get side effects, but it does alter your hormones. So, finasteride is a personal decision.

For those of you who want to try and stop hair loss WITHOUT Finasteride, the only thing I can suggest is frequent use of 2% Nizoral shampoo (used 3-4 days a week; left on the scalp for 5 minutes) and 5% minoxidil twice a day.

The active ingredient in Nizoral has shown to have a small antiandrogenic effect and could help slow the balding process down, while minoxidil keeps the hairs in the anagen (growth phase) longer.

There are other treatments out there that MAY help a little, but in reality the above 3 are the only treatments proven to work in the majority of users. If you want to try some vitamins for hair HEALTH (make it grow faster, shinier, brilliance etc.) look into Biotin (5 mg a day), MSM (3 grams a day), and L-Cysteine (600 mg a day).

Good luck. Any questions, fire away.

Thanks for the great input Leatherface. :) All I personally expect/hope from the spiro is it will hold off or prevent hair loss sides from a testosterone cycle long enough till I am off, I want to get off of it as soon as possible after my cycle because the chance of it blocking DHT through out my body would make post cycle therapy harder.

I have been using the Rogaine foam on the front of my head where peoples hair lines recedes and I have noticed I have lost a small amount of hair for sure which I hear at first the rogaine causes shedding but it grows back? Can you reassure me it will grow back it will ease some emotional stress lol.

I would love to give those vitamins a shot so I am going to search them out online.

Yes, Rogaine does cause a shed when first used. Usually the shed can last anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. In the majority of cases it DOES grow back. In fact, early shedding is an indicator that you are responding to treatment—kicking out the old hairs to make way for the new.

It is worth giving Spiro a shot while you are on a cycle. I know of many bodybuilders that do this. In fact, I would say MOST bodybuilders use spiro and Nizoral frequently when on a cycle to prevent loss. You have already ordered the spiro; I would suggest ordering some 2% Nizoral as well. Many online pharmacies carry it, just do a Google search and you should find it.

With Spiro, Nizoral, and minox I think you might have a decent chance at holding onto your hair while on your cycle. HOWEVER, even when the cycle is done with, I would advise you to stay with the minoxidil; it is not an antiandrogen like spiro and Niz and if you drop it you may shed some hair down the line. If this bothers you, I would drop it now and just stick with spiro and Nizoral.

Good luck.

Thank you so much Leatherface! You are very knowledgeable, I feel much better about my hair now. :)

<If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are headed>

After I posted earlier my package of spiro cream arrived and I was super happy. I just applied a little to my head and I did not notice a bad smell at all like some guys worry about.

Can you buy this “2% Nizoral shampoo” at a store in Canada? I haven’t seen it around.

You’re welcome, Bluray. Hope everything works out for you.

Alborz, 2% Nizoral is a prescription product. However, there are websites you can order from that do not require a prescription. Give https://www.inh … usepharmacy.com a try.

A word of warning though: Nizoral can dry out the hair. Some people use it at night or follow with a conditioner, it’s up to you. I personally use Dr. Lee’s Regrowth Shampoo which is a gentler version of 2% Nizoral with salicylic acid added for better absorption, however Dr. Lee requires a one-time consultation fee of $20 for all online patients. If you’re okay with that his website is https://www.minoxidil.com . His shampoo is great, and FYI he sells spiro cream as well.

Good luck
