Hydration and PE

Hydration and PE

I was having some thoughts today about hydration and the body’s ability to recover from stress and injury. I think its pretty basic knowledge that water is an essential part our body, as it makes up the majority of our composition. It’s pretty well accepted that people who are properly hydrated are healthier, recover from sickness more quickly as well has injury and physical exertion. Well how is that different from our PE? We are breaking down tissues and cells in order to build them back up bigger and stronger. Whether it be ligs/tendons, blood vessels and arteries, or muscles from kegels, they all need to recover after a workout. I was curious to hear about some veteran quick and slow gainers and their daily water intake? Does anyone hydrate before and after a PE session? I mean it sounds kind of silly, but I’ve always learned no question is a dumb question….

This could probably extend as far as diet too, but who know? I’m not very well versed on human physiology so maybe someone could step in and help! Thanks!

I attached an article that talks a little about cellular hydration. It makes sense…also our hydrated cells should be a little larger right, helping with expansion?

Yes. Part of the equation is total body health.

However, electrolytes are key to improving body hydration. If you have excess water you’ll just piss it out. If you have inadequate electrolytes, you’ll dump more. So, not Gatorade. But actual electrolytes added to fresh water.

Not sure I understand your electrolyte bit. An electrolyte is a positive or negatively charged ion… Not sure how I could simply add some magnesium, sodium, chloride or potassium to my water without adding some sport drink to it. However, I could see that addition through a proper diet. The electrolytes are most important in muscle and nerve cells because they help transmit electrical signals, hence the name. I understand that OVER drinking water can cause imbalances in these, but I’m not talking about drinking 2 gallons of water before I stretch myself. I’m not trying to troll or anything, I’m just curious about members responses to keep my PE gears turning. Thanks for your response sparkplug!

Electrolytes, as they talk about with Gatorade, are simply ionic salts. When these salts are added to water they disassociate into their component anion and cation, ala electrolytes! Electrolytes is so much more marketable than salts.

HYDRATION Is really important when it comes to PE in my opinion. A well hydrated body will have an increase in blood flow, carry more nutrients to the muscles or tissues that need repairing, water will also loosen up you tendons and ligaments which will pit some elasticity back into them. With that being said if you stay hydrated everyday your unit can look bigger, hang lower and fuller all the time. I drink about 3 liters of water a everyday and my unit always looks full and hanging low when flaccid it was never like this when I didn’t drink tons of water everyday. Just go to the store and get you a bpa free water jug that hold 2.2 liters of water, drink one of those a day and you’ll start to notice a difference in your flaccid size almost immediately.

And the more water you drink, the more PE can you do when visiting bathroom..

Heat is the key!

Roots, that makes sense! My college chemistry class was always a little fuzzy, but that may have been the hangovers I’m remembering, good simple explanation. Kenish, thats also a great idea about getting a big water jug to keep with me at all times. For our friends (including me) who use the measurement system that makes no sense, 2.2 liters is a little more than a half gallon.

Interesting, Ive noticed I am massively thirsty after an intense session. Not sure why just always happens.

I’m just wondering how drinking (x) amount of water after a workout may speed recovery now. I wish there was an easy way to make it measurable so I could set up an experiment.

UCRugger, just stay hydrated and eat healthy. There is no magic bullet for this stuff, we are talking about stretching/expansion here, not bodybuilding, don’t over think things. ;)

64-100 ounces will keep most men hydrated. Observing your urine color is a better way to gauge things, however. Very light straw to clear, if you’re in that color range you are golden grahams.

Salts. Exactly. Not just table salt, sodium chloride. I think that’s why people use the word “electrolytes” - to distinguish from what people all “salt.”
There are a variety of salts. Point is, if you have a high water but low salt in your body, you will piss out the water and not be hydrated.

There are lots of sugar free electrolyte products that carry a variety of salts, not just sodium chloride.

Doing some reading about hydration and electrolyte balance.

First let me say that my experience has been, since taking my hydration seriously as something I have to do daily, I’ve made the most gains by an extremely big margin.

I’ve been reading that most people live in a persistent state of low potassium, and that people need to balance out their potassium-sodium intake, which in typical American diets, is way outta whack.
