When did you quit Alcohol

gprent; how did it feel for alchohol to be tempting for you? Did you crave it or was it just an escape mechanism?

Personally, boozing up to get drunk is a long and expensive journey for me. Some people talk of getting all rowdy after a few beers. Because of my body weight and composition (and probably heritage) it takes me a rediculously expensive amount of piss to get to the state of drunkeness others seem to fall into so easily. Maybe this is a good thing as it will (financially!) prevent me from becoming a big boozer :)

Your body can become used to large amounts in a fairly short distance of time. When I made friends with all barmaids. I used to be able to drink and drink and mix. Now that I am broke and ass-fucked with school, I rarely drink more than one beer in a week. So I can grow crazy or sloshed on three beers. Of course I did lose 60 lbs during this time also. Paying for liquor really sucks. God, I couldn’t live like that.

Sec, just drink Mongolions. They are tasty and pack a buzz usually. I had one in the past 45 days.

Definitely a craving and then during many years of trying to quit you find out there are triggers that can set those cravings off. So now that I know what my triggers are, I am especially mindful not only when I am in certain situations, but right after them also.

I’m pretty young (24) but, I should probably quit drinking before it becomes a big problem. I drink to get drunk 80% of the time. Other times it is for social reasons or with a meal. I drink alone a lot as well. There is a history of alcoholism in my family too, so I know the signs. Most of which I exhibit. I just can’t bring myself to swear it off just yet. I’m fairly successful, in decent shape and it hasn’t caused any major problems…yet. Mostly due to dumb luck I realize. I have cut back a lot lately but, I go in cycles. I won’t drink much if at all for a month or so. Work out, eat right, sleep better etc. I eventually get bored though. Then I’ll go back to my bad habits and start drinking nearly every night, stop working out, start eating whatever and sleeping a lot less. I never drink before or during work though. I’ve had to learn some things the hard way and I’d rather this not be one of them but, how do I quit drinking completely when it seems so harmless? So, I haven’t quit alcohol yet but, I see it becoming necessary to do so in my future. The sooner the better I imagine.

I’m 43 and still going. I never did hit that “Mature” state yet. I have changed my drinking patterns though. I never drink liquor. I only drink coors light, but I still do occasionally hit the 20 beers/day at a good party or gathering.

Soon I’ll be going to Cape Cod for a weeks vacation and I’ll usually do 100 beers for the week. Is that excessive??

What would you think if it was 100 cokes? Would you drink that many?

Solid,

How many major problems do you think it will take? Your pattern is my pattern, so if you want to see into the future, here I am.

Depends who you talk to, some would say excessive, some would say impressive. While that does qualify as binge drinking, I don’t see the ultra harm of it if it happens very infrequently. I mean if this is an every weekend event maybe. But if you get fucked up on the holidays, I would say be careful. Just don’t drive. Don’t boat, nor swim either.

I used to think it was a race. Who could drink the most, who could mix the most also. I know that at my best (worst?) I could hold it against the vast majority of people. My dumbest move was driving was drinking a 750 ml bottle of Rumplemintz down in 15 minutes. I layed down for about an hour after knocking a base board heater of the wall. Than I slept in my car in the middle of winter for 2 hours. I was dumb enough to drive home. I made it home no problem even getting past the cops sitting at the local circle where major roads came together just 4 miles South of my house. According to the first “wife” that is 32 to 40 shot glasses worth of booze in that bottle. I don’t recommend it to anyone and I never did that much ever again. Maybe I pissed away my Mega Millions lottery winning luck on stupid shit like this. Perhaps the devil takes care of his own too. Just don’t do it.

Know your limits, don’t endanger yourself or anyone else, and be careful.

gprent101;

To answer your question, No, I wouldn’t drink 100 cokes. As a matter of fact, I have given up all soda now for about 6 months. That shit will kill you !!! LOL!

I don’t drink like that all the time, usually only when I go on vacation. I would have to say that my normal intake is about 12-15 beers a week on average. Some weeks it might be more and some weeks I won’t drink at all.

I limit (or try very hard to limit) my alcohol intake to Saturday nites when I take out Mrs 7 and Sundays when Mrs 7’s MILF girlfriends come over to swim in the pool, lay on the beach or want to go jetski-ing. I work out at least 5 days a week and alcohol makes me lazy so I limit it.

In addition my mother was (is I guess) an alcoholic but she quit drinking over 30 years ago so I try to be aware of my heritage in that regard. I am 42.

I wont say that I dont like to drink because that would be a lie. I enjoy the relaxation that a couple of glasses of wine will do for me. Or the refreshing taste of an ice cold beer, yep I like that too.

You all are still missing the point... The story was great and all but should have ass (and) some anal in it.- RWG

To the guys in recovery you have my full support. I admire your dedication and help to others here. To the drinkers, it is no problem that you admit to having a problem. Just sit back one day and say “Am I out of control?” If not, just play it safe, watch your health and try not to drink on any medication.

My “third” wife used to be Neurotic (before I met her, so you can’t blame me). She used to drink often with those Cosmos and shitty domestic beers on top of a few Xanex. Christ! I would be in a fucking coma. I hope all is well with her. I do miss her implants and personality.

When I first got diagnosed with colitis back in early 98, they read my blood and saw my Uric Acid was off the charts. They asked if I drank and I said I didn’t cause I didn’t start till about a year later. I know have to mind my drinking cause of gout. Too much and I get super arthritis in my ankles that makes it feel broken. I had to go on a all water, celery, and blue berry diet to eat up the uric acid and piss it out. I know drink 2 glasses of water with each drink as I imbibe. It balances me out.

Moderation is the key.

Interesting thread. I’m 37. Gave up drinking 3 years ago. Why? I met a girl who was into drugs. I tried to convince her drugs were shit. She told me alcohol is also a drug. As long as I drank I should just shut up. I didn’t want to accept that. I’ve always been a heavy drinker. The most drunk at all parties. I often passed out, woke up hours later and started drinking again. And for a long time I thought I was pretty cool too.

Anyway by the time I met this girl I had slowed down a lot but enjoyed an occasional viking style party. I couldn’t stand the fact that my girlfriend was doing drugs so I broke up with her. To convince myself that I’d done the right thing I went to an NA meeting. One of the first things they said there was “Alcohol is also a drug”. Shit, that really got to me. I realised I had to stop. At that time I had also begun practicing qigong and our master told us that we really should lay off the booze. To be honest I probably had my fair share of alcohol for this lifetime so it was not a very hard decision.

How do I feel now? I tried to drink a few times. Very small amounts (1/2 ounce) of champagne at one wedding and last new years eve. I got sick. My stomach kind of cramped. I recognize this feeling. The same thing happened the first times I tasted alcohol. My body is just as sensitive as it was when I was 15. That’s great I think. I can’t drink even if I would want to.

I’m very lucky I don’t have the alcoholic gene. Or at least I think I don’t. If I’d have it I’d be in hell. The turn of events lead me to a more healthy lifestyle. I’m all grateful :)

Hey guys!!

It’s not the amount you drink. It’s what it does to you!! I read a little “denial” into some of these posts! :D

I still can’t drink Southern Comfort thanks to an unfortunate incident in 1977.

Don’t forget about the adverse health effects of excessive alcohol. You may be able to handle it mentally, but you risk a lot of Bad Things. If I recall correctly, most of the alcohol & health studies show that the beneficial effects of alcohol are offset by the the negatives once you’re doing 3 drinks/day. You guys drinking more than that really ought to consider slowing down.

My father was an alcoholic, as were both of my step-fathers. (I don’t think my mom marries alcoholics, I think she makes them, but that’s a tale for another thread. :) ) My father-in-law is recovering, sober for nearly 30 years. I’ll keep having my 2 drinks/day, but you can be sure that I’ll be keeping a close eye on my consumption and habits.
