Manual stretching: How much force?

Manual stretching: How much force?

I was wondering if you guys could try to estimate how many pounds of force you pull with when doing manual stretches? I think this question could be best answered by guys that have done both manual stretches and hanging with weight so that you have a known amount of force to compare your manual stretches to.

Thanks!

I’m planning to do force measurments. Untill then, an esrimation: 10 kgf.

Are you asking how much force, on average, PEers use, or how much force should be used?

In the second case, give a read here:

Marinera, the first one. It’s just something I started to get curious about.

I read the post you linked to by Firegoat though! Good stuff!

Cervixhunter, that will definitely be interesting when you do the measurements! What are you planning on using to measure the force?

I think (like every thing in PE) the best force is an individual thing. I use to wonder this question but it seems like a lot of the routines big gainers use say they pull hard enough to reach the point just before the point of discomfort. I’ve been doing this lately and I have noticed an improvement in my rate of gains. A figure of 20 newtons or something like that is going to mean something very different to one guy with hair like tendons and a guy with bridge cables

I think the easiest way to measure would be to get one of those fish scales and tie it to a strap/noose when you manually stretch. Surely there are some fishermen on the board.where’s our Minnesotans and Sisconsinites?

I have a “fish scale” up to 7 kg that I’m going to use for the measurements. If it proves to be too short of range, I imagined a pulley system that doubles the measuring range.

I just need a little privacy to do it…

I did the experiment. I cannot be 100% sure, because the setup was different from a manual stretch, but the most likely value I got was 4 kilogram-force. Not less than 3 kgf, not more than 5 kgf.

Very interesting! Thanks for doing that and sharing your findings with us!

I love fishing so I have a couple of good scales. I looked now and I use a pull of about 2-3 kg on average (that’s about 4.5 to 6.5 pounds). I go for lighter stretching but longer sessions.

A more precise measuring gave between 3 and 4 kgf (around 7.5 pounds).
