Insulin needle sizes and lengths?

Insulin needle sizes and lengths?

My uro prescribed Trimix for me but he only had 13 mm needles to give me and wasn’t sure what other sizes were available. So when I placed my order with gulf south rx this morning, they only had the 13 mm as well.

Are there insulin syringes with a 9mm or 10mm length needle available? Or something close to 3/8”? I think that length would give me the comfort of knowing I can burry it and not go too deep. Anyone know?

I think the insulin needles come in #28 and #30 needles. Is one prefered over the other?

Thanks

Ask for “BD Ultra-Fine II.” They’re 5/16 (8mm long, which is plenty to get well into the cavernosal chamber) and they are a 31 gauge needle. My urologist used 29 gauge needles but is shifting to 31s after we talked. Much easier to use, imo.

Thanks a lot. Where can I buy them?

How long can trimix be stored at room temperature before it starts to lose effectiveness? I’m sure I will want to use it away from home sometime. I have lots of questions :)

I got the 31g. at my compounding pharmacy. I’m sure they’re around. Try Costco, or the biggies.

My uro told me that once you load the syringe you can let it out at room temp for up to 15 min..

The vial from which you load the syringe should be refrigerated at all times, so once you load the syringe, put the container back in the fridge. I don’t know how people travel with this stuff but there has to be some convenient way since so many diabetics do so with refrigerated insulin.

My mother-in-law had a nice little cooler. It was very small, it could easily fit into her purse. If you’re a man, it’d easily fit into a glove box. She used it for years and, conveniently, it was nothing more than a thermal soft lunch/snack box. My son has one very simliar, although it has a picture of Buzz Lightyear on it.

This looks interesting.

The Frio pouches look interesting but it raises the question of what temperature range needs to be maintained. If they only use tap water to cool, they probably only keep at about 60 degrees F? I’m just guessing.

In order to preserve the prostaglandin1 (the most degradeable ingredient in Trimix) over a long period of time it has to be iced down or kept in a fridge at, say, 40 degrees or less. Bimix does not contain prostaglandin1 - only papaverine and phentolamine, so probably there is more flexibility there for travel.
