Making a pump?

Hey guys, I’d like to get into pumping, but I dont want to order off the internet. I read where its possible to build one yourself but could someone (someone who’s done it themselves) give me a list of where they got the parts, and how much they cost, I’d really appreciate it.

You might be able to find a good pump at at local porn shop.

Thats something I rather not do, I was thinking more along the lines of “buy tube, buy pump, assemble” type of thing. I dont want anything fancy like an electric pump or anything, just a little hand one is perfect. I read after I posted this yesterday about a tube at a plastics store (wouldn’t some place like Home Depot have something similar?) and Pepboys or a similar auto store having a pump. To close off the end I would just glue another piece of plastic over it, but then how would I connect the pump. Also, does the pump at the auto store have a gauge on it?

Thanks,
gf8at

If you want a good pump check at your local sears, auto parts store. They carry a nice brand for checking vacuum pressure on cars that can also pump vacuum to check other related cars part to ensure the function correctly. Also snap-on and Mac tools. Hope this helps. they run between 25 and 100 bucks dependant to where you purchase it

Hope this infor helps

Thanks, I’ll search for extra info. :)

Ok I found the one at Sears for $35, I’m going to pick it up tomorrow (and hopefully they have it), but I’d also need a tube. Does Hope depot/Lowes have clear pipes? Also is there a guide online for finding the correct size? All I need for the top is a plastic circle, is super glue enough to hold it on ok? (sorry for all the questions) What kind of air-pipe connector do I need?

Thanks

Hi going for8at,

I’ve just built myself a pump and it works really well. It cost next to nothing to make too. This is what I used:

I’m in the UK by the way so no “Home depot” etc..

I bought a 0.5l bottle of German mineral water (Seltzers) that was in a plastic bottle but it had a really thick base. (There must be other similar ones about). I cut around the base but on the bottom of the bottle not the side retaining some of the thick plastic base. I filed it smooth. I bought some 0.25 inch bore clear plastic tube (from home depot)! Cut about 6 inches of tube. With a sharp blade I sliced along the length and placed it around the filed edge of the base of the bottle to make a seal. Don’t worry about the join, get it as good as you can, you’re skin will seal up the gap.

I then got a large Phillip’s wood screw about 12g. Cut off the threaded part and then drill a 3mm hole down the middle. Using the star of the Phillip’s as a centre. Drill a suitable size hole in the bottle cap and push the screw through from the inside. It needs to be air tight. Cut about 3 inches of clear tube and push it onto the smooth part of the screw that’s poking out of the cap.

Now go into your back garden.. Oops I mean back yard take out the inner tube from you’re old bicycle. It needs to be a road type tube not a mountain bike tube. Cut off the valve as close to the rubber tube as possible. Unscrew the valve so it’s fully open and push it into the other end of the clear tube valve end first. Now cut another 24 inches of tube and use the valve as a joiner. Screw the cap onto the bottle. It’s looking good isn’t it?

Now oil up your shaft. Insert into the bottle and suck away! Good eh? And all for less than a pound.. I mean dollar!

Let me know what you think. I’ll do some pic’s if needed tomorrow.

I didn’t have a chance to update this thread yet. I bought a mity-vac pump and a clear drinking glass and made the pump out of that, tonights going to be my first real go with it. Thanks for all the help guys. :)

Piercedwilly,

I’d appreciate seeing some pics of your pump. Well done.

I’m interested in seeing the pump too. By the way, pumping is great, after a session I’ve hit 8.75 BPEL.

I just built a pump with a mitivac and a suction tube from pet smart. I bought the mitivac from Autozone for 29.99 and it is used for brake bleading. It has a gauge and all sorts of adapters that you need for connecting to your tube. I bought the tube from Pet smart for 10.00. Its actually made for cleaning your fish tank. This set up works awesome! One thing that I especially like about this set up is that you can dis-assemble it. The reason I want to dis-assemble the thing is so that the other half doesnt find it! PM me if you have any questions.

Thats what I did, except I used a different tube. I also got the Mityvac but I got mine for $35 at Sears. I got the tube at Bed, Bath, & Beyond for $4, its a container of some sort. Its 8.6” long and 2.6” wide. I just made a hole in it and stuck one of those adapters in.

The size of the tube really matters! My old tube was way too short, too big around, and was ALOT harder to get the air out and keep it out. Get the right sized tube!

Piercedwilly - definitely interested in seeing pics of your home made pump!

Piercedwilly

I have made the same myself, But I used a 0,5 l coca-cola bottle :)

A tip for you: Use silicon to seal the bottle cap, and around the connections. Also I used silicone to fill the gap between the hose at the base.

Works fine, And does not leak at all.

Doesn’t the coca cola bottle bend in under the pressure? I tried something similar and it wouldn’t work. The tube I have now is really strong and I can’t even squeeze it to make it bend in.
