I have heard people complain that they have difficulty in sucking. I think they are trying to do it with their lungs. Or they are trying to hold the suction in between bite down on the tube and stick your tongue in it or clamp it off. If you do it properly with your tongue and cheeks then you can easily and quickly get to painfully low pressures. In short you should have no problem going as low as you want to.
If you bite down on the opening of the tube so it reduces the area of your tongue that is exposed and reposition the tongue often it will be unaffected by the pressure because no part has been exposed long enough.
As far as a pressure gauge is concerned I do agree that it would be a good idea to have one. However, I think pumping can be safely tried without it. I would never have tried it if I couldn’t get into it cheaply and simply. I eventually was willing to spend significant amounts of money on it but only after I had gotten positive results. Getting my own gauge would have been to prohibitive at first and I would never have tried it. That would just have been sad.
So! Safe pumping without a gauge:
1. Use plenty of lube. My experience is that blisters are caused more by friction then low pressure.
2. It should never ever hurt! Pain is your body telling you it is being damaged.
3. Pressures that are fine at first are can begin to hurt over time. When this happens Back off!
4. If you can’t back off far enough take a break.
