Beginning Pumper

I recently purchased a Dr. Joel’s Vaccum Pump with a guage and hand pump. It comes with a “standard” sized cylinder, whatever that is. I’m thinking it’ll most likely be a 2” when I actually need a 1.75” according to what I’ve read on this board.

Now for the questions/requests for information:

Should I purchase a smaller cylinder, or is a quarter inch too large something that I may be able to work with?

I’ve never pumped and I have absolutely no idea what to expect. I’d like to avoid any surprises, specifically to keep myself from thinking something is horribly wrong if my penis looks different in the tube. Likewise, I’d like to avoid thinking I’m not using enough pressure because my penis looks perfectly normal in the tube, and I feel like I should see something “bigger.” What can I expect?

Finally, what would be a good lube, are there after-pumping procedures (such as wrapping my penis with something, putting a ring around the base) that I should be aware of, and is there any other advice or tips or things-to-know of which a beginner should be aware?

*Note: I’m currently reading through the Pumping 101 thread, but I have to sign off before I’ll have time to finish. I mention this in case some of my questions are answered in that guide, you can just mention it, rather than spending your time repeating what I should take the time to read on my own in a sticky thread made available for me to find and read with ease.

What is your erect girth? That is what determines what size to buy.

It’s about half a cm below five inches (the ruler I have only measures in inches, I’m going to buy one that has mm and cm as well).

Wait until you get the 2” cylinder and see how it goes. If you have trouble, it will be trying to keep your balls from being sucked into the tube. If you do have that trouble, then you should probably get the 1.75 tube.

You cock is going to look perfectly normal in the tube, only bigger! I would start off with low pressure like 3 in hg for 5 to 10 minutes and build from there. For at least a month, do not go over 5 in hg and even then, it is probably better to stay at 5 in hg and just go for longer times, like 2 sets of 20 minutes.

I always thought the best lube for me was the KY Jelly or Target/Walmart equivalent, that sells for about half as much. The KY cleans up with warm water and will not deteriorate any pump hardware.

You will not need to use any wrapping or cock rings at this stage of the game.

Welcome to the wonderful world of pumping and to T’s place. You are on the right track by being cautious and seeking advice before jumping in. I agree with everything gprent advises. He is pretty knowledgeable on this as well as Avocate8 who is probably the utmost authority on pumping. So heed anything they tell you. Most of us learned the hard way about some of the dangers of pumping, no need for you to do the same.

One word of caution about the Joel Pump. It is not a Joel Kaplan pump. They have sold a lot of these things, especially in the adult bookstores, but it is completely sub-standard to the Kaplan pump. However the Joel pump will get you started, just ignore the little sheet inside that tells you can pump at 10 in hg for up to two hours after a little conditioning. If you take that advise, you’ll end up with more donuts than Krispy Kreme, and do some irreversible damage.
