Hopefully you can overlap your hang time with something else. It can be for work or for pleasure. This way hanging is more of a “free” activity.
Gains help focus commitment. Without gains your commitment may weaken. It may also take months to see first gains especially if you have already gotten newbie gains. It may take even longer to see gains if you do not develop the level of knowledge and skill required to problem solve.
It’s addictiveness is not a problem if you are not letting the more important things in your life fall apart like relationships or financial security. If it is helping your self-esteem then it can be viewed as self improvement.
If it helps you to be a better lover to your partner then that is a very important improvement.
I have found that having a good measurement system is key to seeing gains(or not seeing gains). For me, measuring BPFSL is my best indicator of gains. I take this measurement often after a hanging session. I always take note of the highest measurement as well as its variability. This creates momentum for me because a gain in BPFSL after a hanging session is only half the battle. This new length has to be reached many times before it will be reflected in BPEL. It then has to be cemented for it to be permanent.
I have found that by changing the angle or sequence of angles, I can see more effective increases in BPFSL. This helps me to refine my routine and be more efficient.
So don’t miss any gains. Don’t be afraid of the ruler and then don’t beat yourself up with it if you do not always see a gain.
Read, develop knowledge, develop the skill.
