numb ass cheeks...need ideas

OK, here’s the deal fellas…

I’m getting into some pretty heavy BTC hanging (27-32lbs) at this point in my PE career, and I’m finding that my ass cheeks go numb during my sets fairly frequently. This never happened until I got into the weight range that I’m working with now. Currently I deal with this by standing up and massaging my cheeks back into arterial communication with the rest of my body.

Put aside that inspiring image for a moment and consider that in addition to exposing myself (literally) to the possibility of having to explain what the hell I’m doing to my wife were she to walk in (old house, no interior door locks) and find me in that inspiring posture, I am also diminishing the effectiveness of my sets as I am forced to relocate the applied stress to different lig bundles when standing relative to when seated. Not good. Additionally, I do work at the computer while hanging, work that doesn’t get done while I’m rubbing my ass cheeks. Also not good.

So I tried an inflatable hemorrhoid pillow. It was tricky to get the air pressure to where I wasn’t rolling around too much or all of the air wasn’t squished to the front of my chair making hanging impossible (another pretty sight, huh?). Long story short…bagged the hemorrhoid pillow idea.

I haven’t got any more bright ideas on this one, so I’m tossing it out to you, the PE cognoscenti…how do I solve this?

Sorry, forgot to mention that I tried 3 different pillows from the couch and they al helped to some degree but didn’t eliminate the numbness.

The right pillow is probably out there, though. I think I need a really firm pillow.

A pillow you use to sleep on. They come in all kinds of firmness, rock hard to feather soft. I can see you now, at the Sleep Shoppe slouching in a chair trying to figure out which pillow would be best for hanging. ;)

Gotcha. Regular bed pillow. I have a pretty firm one but not more so than the one’s from the couch that I tried. I figured that it wouldn’t be any better than the one’s from the couch and was a lot bigger and more awkward to deal with.

The answer is in your sig. You’ve found your limiting factor and it’s your ass. ;)

Not knowing your situation, history, or hanging plan, I’d consider switching angles and hit those different lig bundles at a lower weight. For lig work I prefer using a lower weight and hit different bundles with pressure applied through/with my rice sock with my hand. When I was multi-tasking and needed my hands for work, I actually had a weighted rice sock.

Not an option at this time. I just got done with a period of SO work and am now comitted to my BTC training.

Reduce your torso weight by 30#. Kidding aside, rig up some contraption to provide an upward force on your torso to counteract the force pulling down between your cheeks. Maybe some straps under the arms pulling you up.

Alternatively, arrange yourself in a reclining position. More of your torso’s weight will be borne by your back and less by your buttocks. Reclining is also a better position than sitting for BTC.

That explanation to the wife gets trickier and trickier! Actually, I’m going to mull this one over, although I think the realization of this idea in my life will likely not ocurr until I build my dream house with dedicated PE room.

I do some reclining sets for the increased suspensory lig pull, and the numbness problem doesn’t arise, but I find it difficult to work on the computer simultaneously. Yea, I know, you’re playing your violins for me now, but the more time that I can hang while being productive with my regular life, the more total hanging gets done.

Well, that would simplifiy things a bit, but then again, that explanation to Mrs. X gets even more complicated.

Here’s a thought from far out in left feild: have you seen a chiropractor lately (or ever)? After spending 12-14 hours a day in front of a PC for 4 years, I finally gave into my wife’s nagging and went to one. Was pretty surprised by the results. It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that you’ve got a slight pinch somewhere affecting your circulation that only presents when you hang.

It is certainly possible that I’ve got a situation that could be assisted by a chiropractor, but pretty unlikely, as I am an avid yoga practioner, and have never detected anything “out of whack” in my practice. My work has me running up and down mountains in addition to computer work, and my fitness level is very good.

I think that I’m simply experiencing too much compression betwen the left and right “points” of the pubic bone (forgive my anatomical ignorance) and my chair, causing loss of circulation into my cheeks.

A contributing factor may be the 60lbs that I’ve lost in the last 9 months or so…I don’t have as much “cushion” as I used too. Finding the right pillow to re-establish good cusioning is probably the thing I need to do. That or rig up Modesto’s parachute harness to the ceiling!
