There are many variables in that question. Obviously, the amount of weight you hang as well as the amount of time you spend hanging each day are some factors to consider. Also, because of differences in physiology etc., the amount of hang time and weight needed to make gains will vary from one guy to another. Perhaps it would be better to ask others how long it took them before they saw gains from hanging. (I myself couldn’t really answer that question as I have yet to do hanging exclusively.)

Most veteran hangers will probably tell you to shoot for at least 10 hours per week of hang time. Of course, for the most part, the more you can find the time to do, the better.

Yes, I agree. 10 hours per week of actual hang time is a good minimum goal.

I’ve been hanging 5 hours per week (in my third week). Guess I’ll double it and go up to 10 hours. Too early for me to show any results. Will measure once a month only. Post results later on.

Just be careful - I know, I know, it’s all over the FAQs and other threads- but if 10# hurts (like, stinging hot pain OUCH!) then work your way up to it incrementally- try 7# or something.

I’m at 12.5 pounds now and have been at it for a couple months, and sometimes it’s still just a bit too much and I’ll roll back to 10#. Granted, the ten hours a week thing is challenging to say the least… I’d say I’ve been putting in between 5-10 hours this entire time.

In my first 2 months of hanging, I put on nearly a half-inch with 5 hrs. a week. 5 days of PE, with rest days on mondays and fridays. When you hit your first “wall” later on, you will want to double the intensity ( the weight or the time ).

Starting: 5 BPEL x 4.5 EG on 4/19/03

Latest: 6 BPEL x 5 EG on 2/17/04

Goal: 7 BPEL x 6 EG

Is hanging somewhat of a mental challenge? I mean is there a dull pain or discomfort during hanging?

Until you get into the routine of hanging, it is a mental challenge to become dedicated to getting the sets in.

There should be no pain whatsoever. If there is, something is wrong. The only discomfort should be from fatigue, at which time you lower the weight as needed.
