Or is it an extra half circle piece glued onto the main base circle?

Thanks!

I imagine a variety if different methods would work but in this case I first drilled out the entire base piece, then cut it in half and vertically but only halfway down, then horizontally from the side to meet up with the first cut.

Cantlook, I had a piece of 1” (actual thickness) hardrock maple in my shop and decided it would be perfect to build my first Lightning Rod. I used a 3 3/4” hole saw for the outside diameter of the puck and a 2 1/2” hole-saw for the inside. For those deciding to build your own, first cut the outside half-way, then switch hole-saws and drill the inside completely, then switch back and finish the outside cut. The reason is so that you have more surface to clamp and avoid the risk of injury from spinning material, and so you then have a guide to cut since the inside will have already been cut and there would be no center pilot. I then used a router and with a small radius rounding bit and smoothed the edges inside and out. Sanding all pieces to furniture quality makes it quite beautiful. Working on finishing the head and will be ready to assemble after a thin water based clear coat or maybe a non-toxic paste wax. I will post pics soon. Love this design.
