Footy tape

Footy tape

I found a product in a local sports store called footy tape. It appears to be a shiny plastic tape, not very flexible that sticks to itself but not to skin. Apparently it is used by football players to tape up things like socks, and ears. I have no idea what it is made of but suspect it is used for other things and called other names. $5 gets you a decent size roll.

Can anyone tell me what it is and does it have potential for wrapping such as for comfort sleeves in extending or for ADS?

I am not familiar with “Footy Tape” here in the US but we do have a few variations of tape that is designed to stick to itself and not skin.

Coban by 3M is also known as Nexcare No Hurt Wrap

Secure-Flex by Johnson & Johnson

First Aid Hurt-Free Wrap by Johnson & Johnson

Powerflex Stretch Athletic Tape

Dynarex Sensi Wrap

Vetrap

Pac-Kit 5-911 Self-Adhering Cohesive Wrap (Amazon)

After a quick look online, all this tape looks to be the same type of product as Coban (which I have) but just packaged and targeted to various types of consumers. Just about anything here in the US that is aimed at the medical market is the most expensive variant. Veterinary stuff is cheaper and athletic products even less expensive.

A couple of tips when using this product: don’t wrap too tight as the tape has elastic embedded in it - too tight will over compress the tissue under it and the tape might also pull loose; the ends can be hard to pick loose when unwrapping so simply fold the end back on itself to make a tab.

Hi Mo

The footy tape is not at all like a cohesive bandage such as coban etc. There are similar products to Coban sold locally. They have a sort of crinkly surface and it sticks really well to itself. I found them a bit harsh directly on penis skin but OK if you use cloth underneath. Hard to undo.

The “footy tape” has a shiny surface not unlike PVC electrical tape without the adhesive on the bottom side. However it does stick well to itself but not to skin. Would be a lot easier to undo than coban and can be used many times as it does not crinkle up like coban.

I am sure there are similar products sold in other parts of the world and used in different sports. Australia is footy mad (rugby in some areas and aussie rules –like gaelic football - in others) Soccer is also played but is a minority code.

Once we work out what footy tape is then we can discuss if it can be useful in PE.

Sounds like Footy Tape might be a type of silicone tape.

We have a couple silicone tapes here in the US: a self-fusing tape often called "Repair Tape"; and silicone medical tape. The self-fusing would probably not work for our purposes because it bonds tightly to itself once applied. Medical tape is designed for use on skin.

Medical silicone tape is available from both 3M and Mepitac

I hope the links work - if not search for the product name in the link. Amazon might not be the best source but was convenient of research purposes.

Thanks Mo

It sure looks like the Duck brand tape. However while it sticks to itself it does not fuse. Can easily be unpeeled. It is also not very stretchy. I would assume silicone tape would be pretty stretchy. It has a very smooth surface (shiny) and is quite thin. Thinking it might be good to apply over cloth wrap to hold golf weights used as an ADS as Monty does with cohesive tape.. The benefit would be that it would be easier to remove and can be used many times.

Austfed a pic or link would help I think.

Marinera, good point

Here is a link

It is the third pic down - the one labeled “footy tape”.

While I was searching for a link, I found this

“PVC ELECTRICAL TAPE
Commonly called “Footy Tape” or “Boot Tape”, PVC Electrical Tape is used to hold up socks & hold down laces on football boots. It is also used as an over-wrap to hold down other forms of tape & can be used to hold down rugby players ears in a scrum to decrease friction. - See more at: http://www.fitasaphysio.com.au/FAQRetrieve.aspx?ID=45649#sthash.LOMHNj0s.dpuf”

Now I am pretty sure the Footy tape I am referring to is not PVC electrical tape. I have some of that. PVC electrical tape has an adhesive on one side and is not as shiny as the tape I am referring to. Don’t think it could be used in PE much. I suspect footballers used the PVC tape in the past because it is readily available and does the job. However the tape I found would be better because it sticks without adhesive and can be reused.

Could be these?

Link

Looks nothing else then auto-hadesive gauze. Pretty rough on the penis.

Marinera, No That loks like a fabric tape.

The "Footy tape" is a shiny thin plastic like tape that has the ability to stick to itself but not skin. Also has little stretch ability. Looks too shiny to be PVC.

Yes I have tried coadhesive tapes like Coban. They do work but as you say they are rough on penis skin. They work better if used over the top of fabric or cloth wrap but I found them difficult to remove. Difficult to find the end so you can unwrap quickly after say an extender session. Also not practicable to reuse them.

Tried it out

Did a trial with the footy tape over cloth to hold some golf weights in place while doing ADS. Worked fine for a few hours holding the weights without any slip. Was easy to take off and can be reused. Not sure it is suitable for extending though as it has a slippery surface and a strap might slide over it.
