PE averager for csv data

Ok, I’ve been wanting to get back into programming with C++ anyway, so I figured why not start with something that isn’t that crazy. I am going to make a program which will take all the csv data on the PE Statistics part of the site and have it create a .txt or something like it that shows the averages, min/max, etc. (Most likely ASCII, I’m not interested in making this any more complicated than it’s already going to be)

But I need help planning what data to have it show. Obviously I think a Average should be shown, along with a break down like we see in here. But what else would be handy to be shown? And what would be the easiest way to read it? At this point I’ll take any suggestions and start prioritizing things.

If this needs to be moved to a different section, please do mods… I figured it was applicable here. Or maybe it isn’t until I’m done :)

Maybe it’s a stupid question, but: if the cvs database was in .xls (or similat), it would be really easy to perform any kind of statistics; I can open the cvs with the MExcel or the OpenOffice, but it seem I can’t manipulate data.

I could probably whip up something in Ruby in about 30 minutes, but like I said, I’m using this as a learning thing :)

To be honest, I’m really surprised no one has done something with Excel. Oh well.

By the way, I take it that you are familiar with this thread. It might give you some ideas on how others have looked at the data.

For Lampwick, becoming hung like a donkey was the result of a total commitment.

Just save it as .xls after you load it.

Ugh… We’re starting off in ASCII mode I’m sorry to say ;)

Making some progress. I hate knowing what I have to do, but not how. I had forgotten how anal C++ was about casting. :(

Not to mention the severely unhelpful “segmentation faults”. About as useless a error as you can have…

Thanks! I’ll try.

beenthere and I have been there

BHB,

beenthere has done a partial summary tabulation and I have done a statistical summary of the TP PE Data Site numbers, in “The (statistical) Truth About Cock Size” thread. Mine is post number 91
Priapologist - The (statistical) Truth About Cock Size

and beenthere recapitulated his data in post number 94:
beenthere - The (statistical) Truth About Cock Size

I am curious to see how your analysis compares to ours.

Control that link, Priapo. There isn’t any #91 in that thread.

Damn HTML…

Tell me the right page, I’ll edit your post.

Priapologist, that thread is where I got the idea :)

Seemed like it would be helpful to use all the data we have. I left off last night with a pretty good start. Still embarrassed I couldn’t get something as simple as at least the average working, but it’s been over 6 years since I last did anything with C++.

Starting up again today. I’ll be attaching the source code as I get working copies. I’ll need someone else to compile a .exe (I’m a linux only man). I’d rather post source anyway, just so anyone can look and make sure I’m not doing anything dumb. :D

Just import the csv file into excel, save it as a spreadsheet file, and enter whatever formulas you want. Why are you using C++???

Did you read the first or third post?

And as odd as it may seem, I can program in PHP, Ruby, Perl, and a ton others, but I have no clue how to do complex operations in Excel or OpenOffice `:-)

At any rate, if I can get a good program working, ThunderSS may even be able to use it as a cron job on the page to update daily (or whatever) averages for the site. Something a spreadsheet can’t do. I’m starting small though, will wait to see how it develops before I go getting any weird ideas. At the very least (as mentioned before), I’m using it to relearn something I had forgotten and want to get back into.

Ok, got the first running version going. Not the most sophisticated, but should be accurate.

The first info set is:

Total Number of entries: 8725
Total people: 3847
Average EL (BP): 6.39747
Average EG: 5.02612

I’m including the source zipped so anyone can double check stuff if they so want.

I’m thinking we also want to know how long it took people to gain right? Maybe a average of how long it took everyone to gain an inch?

Need some ideas here.
