How Come Inches Instead Of Centimeters?

Penflex, couldn’t agree with you more. I didn’t view it quite like that. The size change according to those variables makes measuring not a completely accurate process, I concede.

However, although the variables do change size dramatically, there are ways to work around them. If one were to ignore those variables, they might as well throw out the ruler because they would most likely become frustrated with inconsistent measurements. I know from experience my size can range depending on how hard I worked the willy, my expeditions in bed, or how much caffeine I drank. It’s all environmental.

I try to cut this down by always measuring on my day off in the morning when I wake up. It’s the most consistent way for me to gauge my progress.

I honestly didn’t expect so many responses to this question, especially since now in retrospect, I notice it was a stupid question of me to even ask. Thanks for your research, time, and effort. Now I know precision does not equate to accuracy when dealing with environmental variables.

We do it because we are the arrogant world-conquering anglophiles.

America beware!

Steven Thoburn, the metric martyr, is serving life imprisonment in the UK for selling bananas by the pound instead of in kg. We are no longer free to use the measures of our forefathers.

Ram,

It’s too late for us in Britain; we are a doomed and dying people. I just want the new world to be aware of what’s coming.

And no, I certainly have not been hanging around S&G. My weapon of choice would be a short swagger stick tucked under my arm or in extremis an unfurled umbrella.

I also measure in CM. Recently because of some mechanical books I’m reading started to think in inches and pounds, but the problem is, that it will always be something that’s not precise and especially doesn’t make any sense when talking about very small sizes. It’s a bit strange that the metric system which uses the 1..10 decimal counting system uses these measures which can’t be expressed in simple numbers in this 1..10(arabic) system. 1/16 of an inch is 0.15875 cm which is something that I imagine would be hard to read from the ruler. But then again in the european system 1/10th of a centimeter(which is 1 mm and 1/25.4th of an inch) is easy to read. I might be wrong, in that it’s possible that 1/16 of an inch or 1/32 is easy to read on a ruler, but with centimeters you can easily read 0.5mm, so more precise. Not that it does make sense in penis measurements, because you do 1 kegel and it’s already 1 mm bigger.

:rolling:

Pssst. Don’t tell anyone but I used millimeters to track my hanging gains.

By the way, how many stones do you weigh?

Yeeeeeeeeeaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgh! ~Howard Dean Illustrations & Diagrams PE -- What's it all about? Read this.

Plain and simple, we didn’t go to the metric system because we didn’t want to have to change all the football fields from yards to meters.

Wow, I thought you were joking! Is he really serving life? Not life? he was fined or something to that effect?

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Thirteen stone and a few pounds.

BTW our continental cousins find stones (14lb) very funny especially when they translate it into their own language as “rock” or “boulder”.

Get your stats in cms, and then %2,54, much more accurate…

I exaggerated a tad. The criminal justice system in the UK is a joke. Its run for the benefit of those that make money out of it and repeat offending criminals are treated almost like good money making customers.

On the other hand you can now be prosecuted by the state for selling fruit and veg in lbs, breaking the rules in a TV quiz show, returning home from active service in Iraq with an Iraqi weapon as a trophy of war, refusing to admit in a civil court case you slept with a prostitute so as not to upset your wife. All the aforementioned were recent cases and resulted in convictions of people that in a sane system would never be considered for a state criminal prosecution.

Mbuc,

there is no sane system anywhere, in case you were looking for somewhere to emigrate to. Madness never goes under a certain minimum limit, no matter where you are.

Thunder,

Yes, that is exactly the strength of the metric system. Less conversion factors = less risk of confusion = fewer fuckups.

I don’t agree with you on that one. My grandfather’s Oldsmobile had both standard and metric bolts under the hood. Real confusing. Besides, one influential industry is metric - drugs go by the K, do they not? Seems that standard will go the same way witchburning did, i.e be considered an practice sane people do not engage in ;)

Taped onto the dashboard of a car at a junkyard, I once found the following: "Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement." The car was crashed.

Primary goal: To have an EQ above average (i.e. streetsmart, compassionate about life and happy) Secondary goal: to make an anagram of my signature denoting how I feel about my gains

MGUS, That is not what I meant completely, the machines that make things are quite expensive, in my factory we have several 1 million dollar plus machines with a life expectancy of 30-100 years now if we phased out the standard measuring system that would mean that essentially every part made for those machines in standard would have to be converted to metric. This is not a simple task as there are standards for pitches on threads and gears and the machines that make these usually only make standard or metric parts, as a 1/2 inch bolt is 12.7mm in diameter small difference in size large difference in technology, by the way this means if we switched now that all machines made in America and for America in the standard format would have obsolete parts. This is not transparent to people who do not work in the manufacturing industry dealing with machinery on a daily basis. Oh yeah by the way we have Japanese machines that use standard parts in our plant also, so go figure.
