Wrong. The Human animal is designed to eat one thing: fruit. From our oral cavity to our digestive system, fruit is the most perfect food for our bodies.

Hobby, one can only lose so much water weight before they die. I’m confident that my experience was losing much much more than just water weight.

In his recent re-write of his book, Dr. Atkins cites many studies to illustrate the metabolic advantage. These studies included bodyfat analysis to see what specifically was being lost, fat or water. Fat it was. Based on my experience, and I’m not one to believe in voodoo magic or be easily swayed by slick marketing, I tend to agree that it does exist.

I suppose we will have to agree to disagree on this. I’m happy your approach is working for you, as mine is for me.

The physician pretty much agrees with Hobby’s position.

I think that low carb diets are allright for young and relatively health people. However If I have a fat guy that cannot stick to regular hypocaloric diets, but can stick to low carb diets, I say have at it as long as I can monitor him a bit more closely. I have been impressed with the work of Covert Bailey (although I think the last stuff I read from him was about 10 years ago). In his original work Fit or Fat, he asserted that eating wasn’t the problem, it was laying around on our asses. He later modified his theories, but I basically thought that he had a point that too many others had overlooked.

Check it out guys, no need to have a big dick if you ain't gonna use it!!

Atkins died.

Saw that on MSNBC at lunch.

Hobby, if you have the new version of Dr. Atkin’s book, the studies are in chapter 7, page 64.

Can someone write a diet for me? I have a very limited budget but I would love to lose some weight on my belly.

Yep.

IMO, resistance training is essential in any fat loss plan. Out of shape slobs (me) and/or those new to lifting can usually gain some muscle while losing fat. At the very least lifting helps preserve muscle. If you eat a hypocaloric diet and don’t exercise, expect to lose 50/50 fat and muscle.

The more muscle you have, the more you get to eat without getting fatter. What a deal! Figures I’ve seen vary from a low of about 30 kcal/day per additional pound of muscle up to about 60 kcal. I suspect the lower number is closer to the truth. Adding 10 lbs. of muscle increases your maintenance Calories by at least 300 per day. That’s nothing to sneeze at. Those extra 10 lbs. will burn 109,500 kcal in a year, the same as burning roughly 31 lbs. of fat.

Speaking of exercise for losing fat, anyone interested in cardio workouts should do a Google search on HIIT. It works very well.

I agree that if you consume more calories (which is simply a unit of measure for energy), than you burn, you will gain weight, period.

If you consume less calories than you burn, you will lose weight. Be careful to not burn too much in proportion to what you consume or your metabolism will slow down to compensate.

Nothing beats a plan of cardio + weight routine weekly while watching high glycemic carbs to prevent insulin spikes and crashing, and a gram to a gram and a half of protein per lean body mass pound. Don’t forget your fibre! And eat yur fruit and veggies! Fruit is generally a low glycemic carb choice because the fibre in the fruit slows the digestion and absorbtion process. Protein and fat do the same thing.

My 2 cents :)

DLD,

Scroll back a few posts for an outline of what I’m doing. It’s not the only option or even necessarily the best for you.

Regardless of what you eat, a good starting point for Calories is 12x bodyweight. Try that for a few weeks and then adjust if necessary. Losing 1 - 1.5 lbs. of fat per week is ideal. Not more than 2 lbs. I’m talking about fat loss, not necessarily weight loss. If you exercise you may gain some muscle. If you do a keto diet you’ll piss out 10 lbs. or so in a few days. Pay as much or more attention to the tape measure (or bodyfat calipers) as the scales. My waist size has always been a fairly reliable indicator of my fatness. I’m sure everyone is different, but I have to lose about 6 lbs of fat to take an inch off my waist.

Some of the best bang for the buck sources of protein are skim milk and canned tuna (stock up when it’s on sale for 3/$1 or better). Pot roasts are cheap and versatile (plain with gravy, used for stew meat, beef salad sandwiches). Some cheaper steaks are ok if sliced thin and used in stir fry. Chicken breasts are reasonably priced if bought in bulk. Eggs are good for breakfast.

Natural (not Jiffy crap loaded with hydrogenated fat) peanut butter contains good fat and is tasty. Use olive oil. Fish oil capsules (good source of omega 3) are cheap at Costco or Sam’s Club.

No problem, DLD.

I forgot to mention that you can find calorie and nutrient breakdowns of various foods here. Many people like the online food tracker at www.fitday.com. I haven’t tried it yet.

Thanks Hobby
this stuff is confusing. I am going to print it out and try to understand more. I have a terrible diet now at least I think I do. I eat mainly pasta, sandwiches (ham, swiss, roast beef) Hamburger once in a while. Alot of the time I will by whatever is buy one get one free because food is so expensive so that means alot of TV dinners and pizza when it’s on sale. Lots of cereal too. I am Way under active because of my meds. They make me very tired. The strange thing is I was skinny most of my life but for the past 3 years I have been about 20 lbs. over weight. Maybe it’s the meds and lack of activity.

Hey Hobby

Very good links. I went to fitday and signed up right away. It really is amazing!!! It does all calculations for you. Highly recommended for anyone who feels they need to see what they are REALLY eating!

Wow!!

shikodo

I really like fitday too, however thier calorie requirement calculator was off. it told me I needed 3400 calories for maintenance (thats about 1000 too much). Overall its a really neat site!!

Check it out guys, no need to have a big dick if you ain't gonna use it!!

so the verdict of the diet is? bad? or people should not look at it as a protien diet
