Why you wrap when you clamp

I wanted to start clamping soon. I read and understand the basic concept but there is still something that I haven’t been able to find out.

Why do you use a wrap while clamping. Is it for grip. Is it for comfort.

What can be used as a wrap. I’ve heard about the mouse pad, therp wrap, and stuff but I was wondering if something like just simply wrapping with gauze could work.
