1. Hanging gives you control of exactly how much weight you are applying and for how long. Manual exercises are much more fluid and can target many more angles, but it is hard to hold a stretch for as long as you can if you are hanging.

2. You will have to figure this one out for yourself. You may like one or both or none. Find what suits your anatomy.

A wet washcloth in the microwave works too (be very careful, it can get extremely hot), or even a hot shower or bath. Some of us have even experiment and had good results with infrared heat lamps.
