Condoms 'too big' for Indian men

A survey of more than 1,000 men in India has concluded that condoms made according to international sizes are too large for a majority of Indian men.

The study found that more than half of the men measured had penises that were shorter than international standards for condoms.

It has led to a call for condoms of mixed sizes to be made more widely available in India.

The two-year study was carried out by the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Over 1,200 volunteers from the length and breadth of the country had their penises measured precisely, down to the last millimetre.

The scientists even checked their sample was representative of India as a whole in terms of class, religion and urban and rural dwellers.

The conclusion of all this scientific endeavour is that about 60% of Indian men have penises which are between three and five centimetres shorter than international standards used in condom manufacture.

Doctor Chander Puri, a specialist in reproductive health at the Indian Council of Medical Research, told the BBC there was an obvious need in India for custom-made condoms, as most of those currently on sale are too large.

The issue is serious because about one in every five times a condom is used in India it either falls off or tears, an extremely high failure rate.

And the country already has the highest number of HIV infections of any nation.

‘Not a problem’

Mr Puri said that since Indians would be embarrassed about going to a chemist to ask for smaller condoms there should be vending machines dispensing different sizes all around the country.

"Smaller condoms are on sale in India. But there is a lack of awareness that different sizes are available. There is anxiety talking about the issue. And normally one feels shy to go to a chemist’s shop and ask for a smaller size condom."

But Indian men need not be concerned about measuring up internationally according to Sunil Mehra, the former editor of the Indian version of the men’s magazine Maxim.

"It’s not size, it’s what you do with it that matters," he said.

"From our population, the evidence is Indians are doing pretty well.

"With apologies to the poet Alexander Pope, you could say, for inches and centimetres, let fools contend."

Condoms falling off is nearly always related to the penis girth being too small not the length too short.

A sheath that is (for example) designed for a 7” penis will stay partly rolled up on a 5” penis but will only fall off if it is too loose width-wise.

The best way to describe a smaller size condom (and they market these in Australia) is to describe them as ‘tighter-fit’.

South African men might enjoy buying extra large condoms

A range of extra-large condoms has been launched in South Africa, to cater for "well-endowed" men.

"A large number of South African men are bigger and complain about condoms being uncomfortable and too small," said Durex manager Stuart Roberts.

Aids activists say the new condom could encourage men to practise safe sex in South Africa, where some 6m are HIV positive - more than any other country.

Some South Africans are reluctant to use condoms, says activist Thandi Xolo.

Mr Xolo, from the National Association of People Living With HIV/Aids (Napwa), said both men and women fear being labelled as promiscuous if they are seen with condoms.

"This could help condoms become cool," he said. "Men will buy them to boost their ego." Even more importantly, it will remove the excuse made by some men for not using condoms - that they are too small. However, Mr Xolo said he was not sure how many of the millions of condoms sold each year in South Africa were being properly used.

firegoat’s comment: When I lived in SE Asia (actually I was in Thailand at the time), I remember saying to a friend "don’t bother with the local condoms (that were provided in the hotels), they are too tight…" I was just trying to be straight forward and suggesting he bought some Durex or similar. He was seriously pissed off at me. Justifiably. I hadn’t thought before I said it…

Maybe if I’d been in South Africa I’d have said the opposite if the first condoms I’d come across had been extra-large.

We do need to stop kidding ourselves. There are size differences between races. And they follow a pattern.

But not every person of a certain race has a ‘typecast’ dick. There is a huge variation within every race. So just because someone is a certain race tells you nothing you can be certain of.

On the matter of how many condoms sold each year in S Africa were being properly used…. I had a friend who went to Africa to teach about condom use to prevent AIDS. This is true - I’m being serious. His co-workers demonstrated condom use by rolling a condom over a broom handle. When he went back a year later and found the AIDS rate was not drastically changed, despite handing out many free condoms, he discovered that many guys had a broom in the corner of the bedroom with the condom rolled over it.

They really thought the condom was some sort of magic like a witch doctor might give them, and that rolling it over a broom would prevent AIDS and pregnancy.

This news report is idiotic. As LWH said, it doesn’t matter if a condom is longer than necessary. And indeed, the “standard” for condom lengths (typically over 7”) is far longer than needed for the majority of men in any country.

The idea is for condoms to be long enough to cover the vast majority of penises completely, which means that condoms are much longer than most men need. Likewise, condoms are designed so that they are a snug fit on the vast majority of penises, which means that they are much tighter (i.e., smaller) in girth than most men need. I believe that an average sized penis would do better with “large”-sized condoms than standard condoms.

I distrust this article simply because they said that the condoms were too loose and Indian men were too short. That makes no sense. I think most people here can recognize that girth affects how well a condom fits.

Also it might not be race, but rather cultural or dietary. It is very hard to eat a diet similar to Americans (mainly trying to match the protein intake and vitamin intake) in poor countries like India. So many of those people are vegetarians, you realize how hard it is to get your essential amino acids from non-meat food?

Drawing conclusion and causation from this kind of survey is far-fetched at best. As statistically, relationships are hard to prove enough. Proving causation is pretty much impossible.

I live in a country with a lot of Indians and their penises are generally deemed to be average about 5.5 -6 inches.

Funny study. I always laugh when people put it in my face (I’m Indian btw). I wonder if this actually has any real truth. I for one started PE at 7.125”BPEL and 5.125”G. Maybe this explains why every Indian girl I’ve been with has been really tight (IE, they are built for smaller penises). Maybe I am more on the American standard because I grew up here and actually received adequate nourishment. My current girlfriend, who is white, saw this study and did not believe it at all given her experience with me (although I’ve grown since my starting stats).

It’s funny because I wonder which stereotype is worse: to be stereotyped as having a small penis but really be huge or to be stereotyped as having a huge penis but really be small. I have a buddy from college who is African American who hated the size stereotype as he wasn’t that well endowed and it seemed to eat him up.

I am a white guy living in China, and I can say that there is definitely a size difference between different races. I have been here for a long time, and visited a lot of various massage parlors where they offer any kind of service (it’s culture here, everyone does it). I have been with girls that have seen every kind of penis there is, and Asians are the smallest and blacks the biggest. The main difference between black guys and white guys is girth, whereas black guys generally are thicker. Length is pretty much the same between whites and blacks. I am often too long for most girls (7.5”).

Photon, is that bp or nbp? How much is usually left out in the cold? I’m a white guy in asia too, and having fun with it. I’m 6.5 nbp and can often rub the back of the pussy, but not always. I usually get size comments, sometimes they freak out. Other times they don’t even notice a difference.
