Personally, I find the most reliable PI to be fatigue.

Most PEers experience their fastest and easiest gains within the first few months of starting. Generally these are referred to as ‘Newbie Gains’.
As for greatest gains, I make my best gains basically when I’m consistent with my efforts. Consistency is absolutely key to PE— without consistent, dedicated effort you will probably make no gains.
