NEED HELP! Concussion stuff

well I got my concussion playing rugby

I was down in a ruck and someone stepped on my right temple with my head to its side. I saw stars and got a little disorineted but felt fine after so i continued to play for another 50 minutes. Ever since I am tired all the time, headaches and I have lost my sex drive. Ive seen two doctors and both say just wait it out, the second one has given me a blood and hormone test. Its been three weeks today and Im going insane wondering when ill be “normal” again. I haven’t PEd at all or anything.

I had a concussion in 1989. I slipped on ice Thanksgiving weekend when it snowed out of nowhere. I used to such a nice guy, since then I took a darker path to say the least. I had MRIS and X rays on my head before, but I had the ailment that day, only hours before. if you have not died or gone into a coma yet, you have the odds of coming out fine pretty good.

Nice supportive post there teaser.

You have to watch out for a while because the brain swells I think (though I was concussed when I was told that). So playing rubgy again is probably a bad idea until you feel better.

I have suffered a total of four bona fide concussions, and other than watching a best of Larry King marathon I can’t think of a worse feeling.
Everytime I had my brain rattled like you Hank I saw stars - I would also loose consciousness for a few moments. Always, a 1/2 hour later I would vomit and feel much better and things would improve even more after taking the no-no nap.

What does not sound good though, is that you have not improved - especially after such a long period of time. Not to scare you but it sounds as though something isn’t right, and it is very good that you are seeking medical attention.

Can you describe your lethargy? Is it a physical feeling or a mood related thing? Are you in pain?

I had a concussion with memory loss. I damges the bridge between short-term and long term memory. So every 7 minutes I would ask where I am at and what time it was. Over and over again. I never recalled exactly acting 3 hours before the incident and 10 hours after. This period of time is lost to me still. Sit out the head beating sports my friend.

If you can get a third opinion and leave it at that. Explain your situation and what you feel. Are you ancy from not playing and pissed over that? Any neck pain? My friend had his neck broken and didn’t know it till he want jogging several days later and he fell over in excrutiating pain from a wrestling injury days before.

the concussion was a grade 1 concussion

I have not played rugby since

the weird thing was I felt normal for about 4-5 days a week after the concussion and I was back to having sex but than a few days later my symptoms came back.

Im constantly feeling depressed and ansy, I get a headache on and off and my eyes often feel heavy. I have been reading on the internet and it has said things about antidepressants and stuff like that but I don’t know….

My one buddy got into a car accident while driving as his job. He spent 3 months out on Workman’s Comp cause of the severe concussion with the headache feel going on. He wasn’t faking or anything like that, he loved working. He went crazy watching TV for those months. poor Guy, a good dude too. Shit! I should call him and see if he wants to go drink now.

I’m no expert but it sounds like your nervous system got scrambled a bit. While you await your test results you really need to take it super easy. Get plenty of rest and eat right, don’t drink alcohol or smoke weed - and above all avoid stressful situations. You need to recuperate adequately.

If your doc didn’t do x-rays and/or MIR you should request them - consider what Twat related about his buddies broken neck - unless thoroughly checked out you don’t know what is going on up there.

But you know - I have never heard of a person getting a concussion simply from pressure being applied to the skull - the way you describe it. As I understand it a concussion results when a blow to the head is severe enough to cause the brain to bang against the inside of the skull - and a sort of brain bruising occurs.
It is weird that you didn’t experience a loss of consciousness or a few of the other traditional symptoms of a concussion - like blurry vision and vomiting.

My doctor just ordered a CAT scan for tommorow and has given me a antidepressant to help me relax and sleep so I can get better faster
its Celexa
anyone have experience with it? what do I do once I wanna d off it?

oh and i got blurry vision and I felt like vomiting

I don’t know that much about these sorts of things but I will still add my 2 cents :) . Perhaps it is merely a coincidence that you developed these symptoms at this point in time. Maybe it is not the rugby accident causing them at all? It might be unlikely but at least something to consider. Maybe something else is contributing/compouding the rugby accident symptoms? It could be something as simple as a cold that is weighing on you on top of the concussion.

-My dear boy, do you ask a fish how it swims? (No.) Or a bird how it flies? (No.) Of course not. They do it because they were born to do it...

A grade one concussion is enough to make you see stars and rattle your cage a bit, but should not have long term effects.

I do however need to ask a few questions;

1. Did you know where you were after it happened and for 3 to 4 days afterward?

2. Did you know what day it was the day it happened and for 3 to 4 days afterwards?

3. Did you know who you were when it happened and continue to do so?

The reason I asked these questions (and I’m sure you heard them before) is for what the medical community calls orientation. Answer one and its orientation x 1, answer all three and its orientation x3. The more orientated you are the less severe the injury, especially one to the head. The brain does not like being shaken around, and there is a term for that called coup and counter coup. What happens is that when hit, or in your case stepped on, the brain violently shifts to one side of the head, then it bounces back. Causing a concussion, the most severe is a grade 3. That is where you black out and stay that way for over 24 hours. In your case, the doctors have said grade 1, meaning a mild shake up to the brain. A grade 2 is where you black out for more than 5 minutes but less than 24 hours.

Headaches, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting are not good several days afterwards or in your case weeks. I read where you are scheduled for a CAT scan, good. If the symptoms get worse before the CAT get in touch with your doctor immediately, not to scare you or panic you, but you might have, notice I said MIGHT have some bleeding going on in there or some swelling causing the symptoms to remain and not subside. Good luck to you, keep us informed as we tend to worry ;) .
