Illustrating the Physiology of Male Sexual Functions - Stage 1: Resource Gathering

Graphical Illustrations are not what I do for life, but it’s something I can do, something I can do well, and something I enjoy going into immense detail with. My father is a drafter and I nearly went down that field myself, so doing things accurately is of a really high importance to me along with proper perspective to convey understanding to the target audience.

The physiology of the penis (or phallus) and the areas that involve allowing a better functioning “unit” is something that also interests me greatly.

Following a lot of discussions on here often leads me try and find drawings of the penis physiology, only to find poor quality renderings or hard to understand perspectives, worse yet are multiple sources calling the same area something different. Some people have nice images of these things but can’t share them because of copyright infringement. This is even worse for beginners who are just entering into the realm of PE.

The short is:
I want to illustrate the physiology of male sexual functions, whatever that might mean to us.

But. I don’t know everything about the physiology of the our sexual functions (the Penis etc), I’m certainly no doc, and I’ll humbly admit that my time has been occupied in other areas of life (which is good). My research of this material is also poor when reading through medical documentation, which is likely going to be needed. Considering the precision that this is going to involve I also don’t want to screw up and will need a collaborative nod to “facts” presented. This is where I need your help.

I’m doing these illustration(s) 1:1 using centimeters as the unit of measurement. Still undecided upon perspectives, colours and illustrative styles.

Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to bring me images of body parts, dimensions to those parts with sources linked, and any other relevant information such as differences when aroused. I also invite you to chime in on what kind of perspective’s you find most useful or areas you find most confusing and would like cleared up.

This isn't something that's going to be overnight, I don't even think it'll be done by Christmas, I have no deadline for it, just a passion, which I have a lot of for a lot of things.

Size is little more than a controllable perception without an accurate means of measurement.

Gah. Can we please have 30 minutes or an hour to edit our posts instead of the measly 10?

I don’t believe so, best bet is to edit and preview as much as possible before posting.

What twat said is measly! J/k.

Recognize.

You may want to start over with a new thread. We can vanish this one.

Kind of use this as a temp scratch pad for ideas for a wee bit. Ask for help and make sure you have plenty of space for Private messages. A surprising number of possible help will show up via Pm instead of thread replies, especially since you are brain storming.

Look for grammar and spelling nazis for help with any editing.

Look for people in any and all med fields, even peripheral ones like biology, physiology, sports training, etc…..

A mod can also clean your thread for you possibly upon their convenience.

My advice, start general, then go into subsystems. The dick as a whole than corpus cavernosa, urethra, etc….

Once you would have a base, you can than draw what happens in theory after certain elements are modified. For instance ligaments from hanging as an example.

Are you going for technical writing to accompany it? Or are you looking for another person to polish it and make it have some “life” to it?

Find a buddy to send a draft to before posting. The reason is that way you get a fresh set of eyes and perception of how your words express, not what you intend to say in your mind.

Flesh your idea out some more before we prune, collapse, edit, or trash this thread.

Please show all work in the margins for proper credit.

Is there some reason why standard anatomical illustrations such as Grey’s or similar publications aren’t sufficient?

They are highly detailed, and based on dissections. I don’t see how you can hope to improve on that.

Fantom - I’m a physiotherapist - they really say nothing. Can You tell how does the engine works by only looking into picture?

Jawbone - as You know - I’m in (“some people” :D :D :D ;) )

There is also some text in the book . The pictures are there to show what the text is explaining

Psst! The link is at the bottom of the page :bigwink:

I know - I have the book. For example, what exactly - as a therm of movement - You understand as “helps to ejaculate” or “takes part in maintaining of the erection”? ;)

twatteaser - Thanks for the post.

There will be another thread, later, detailing exactly what it is I’ll be illustrating, what the perspectives and "cuts" there will be and why there will be those perspectives and cuts in the way that they are. Questions like you posed above also need to be answered.

Right now the idea is just that, to use this as a scratch-pad. One of the changes was to change the title from "Resource Gathering" to "Thought Gathering", there was a re-composition of a few paragraphs to reflect this as well.

Short of it is I might only sketch out the ideas before going into them completely, but I need these thoughts here before I go in and seriously go at it. It’s not an easy undertaking.

Likely the next thread-starter will be more composed. Any takers on reading it before I post it?

Yes, absolutely. Just about any medical drawing is great because it’s going to allow us to compile a set of images and find what we appreciate most about them, along with what doesn’t work about them to avoid those mistakes.

I’m in the process of gathering up every working link through the Penis Anatomy Links, including it’s recursive threads that I’ll post in 1 post.

I didn’t forget anyone else here, just getting to you in good time. You’re first fantom :)

While I haven’t exhausted every anatomical illustration of the pelvic area in the bookfilled world, I have had a look at gray’s anatomy (both the ~1900 editions which are free of copyright and the ~2007 edition, which is not).

There are a few ways that can be improved:

  • Different target audience requires different perspectives: I can’t stress this enough. While we’re interested in the penis on a physiological as well as psychological level, the way we look at it is entirely different from the Medical, Academic and partially the Hobbyist communities. Which most illustrations are done for.
  • Free AND Good Quality: Take a look on google images or anything on the ‘net and you’ll find tons of images of the sexual anatomy, beyond the fact that things aren’t geared towards PE and focus on other areas, some are of a high quality, but can we use it? Just because someone scanned it in from a book and it’s on the internet doesn’t mean it’s legal.
  • The power of vector vs raster: Beyond the ability to re-size something to perpetually endless proportions when compared to raster, as seen here , SVG is composed of layers and can be programmed to have parts hidden or given transparency, much like what is seen with clear film layers used in encyclopedias. Tags, labels etc can be toggled. Views can be set up to portray different kegels, action/animation sequences can be applied etc. All in a modern web-browser (just about anything but Internet Explorer).

Size is little more than a controllable perception without an accurate means of measurement.

I should note, if a resource comes up that provides all this, I have no problems stopping all this, I don’t tend to get “personal” about things.
