Get a piece of paper put some marks for 5”, 5.25”, 5.5”,5.75” and 6”.
I found it much easier to get a proper measurement this way.

I like this idea! And what one could also do is mark the piece of paper when he measures his EG and this can give a more accurate measurement.
What about fabric tape measure? Same thing? Any advantage to to paper?

I did the paper method when I measured. I would think it bends easier
