Youtube is a great resource for getting info on how to play. There are even good teachers that will do lessons over skype so you can get a proper training. A good teacher can make all the difference.
Once roots gets you his guitar get it restrung with new strings (less than $10) and a Snark (tuner less than $20). New strings will help anny guitar sound better and a tuner will make it possible to make sounds that are musical.
As a player of more 30 years I strongly recommend lessons. Lessons will eventually make your efforts at filling the house with beautiful sounds most possible. Learning good technique will make many forms & types of music possible. I tried early on to "figure" it out, the vaunted "self taught" approach but you will waste years throwing darts hitting musical notes by luck & chance and limiting what you can play.
Like anything else it will take work to get good at it but one day you may amaze yourself by making the magic that is music eminate from your fingertips. My life is much richer for having done the hard work leaning HOW to be able to play music.
