I used to use a Thesaurus when I was working on improving my vocabulary a while ago. I have notebooks that are 500 pages long replete with (mostly recondite) words that I’ve written down. I’d spend hours a day practicing vocabulary. This routine started just a few years back when I was high school and I wanted to attain the most satisfactory score on the SAT that I could. The curriculum of daily vocabulary study simply stuck.

Also, profuse reading coupled with mnemonic devices expanded my lexicon by approximately 20-30 words per day; most of them are extremely onerous to fit into a conversation, however, so I abstain from using them. But please, don’t assume everyone with a large vocabulary and a (kind of) pretentious parlance is using a Thesaurus to sound smart. I learn English vocabulary the way I’m learning Hindi and Turkish vocabulary now; vocabulary acquisition via following a stringent regimen and having an innately good memory doesn’t mean I’m looking at a Thesaurus to type out all of these long ass posts.
