NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - There’s new advice for older men who want to preserve their sexual function: have sex, and have it often, researchers say.

In a study that followed nearly 1,000 older Finnish men for five years, researchers found that those who were regularly having sex at the start of the study were at lower risk of developing erectile dysfunction (ED) by the study’s end.

In fact, the more often the men had sex, the lower their ED risk.

The implication, say the researchers, is that men should be encouraged to stay sexually active into their golden years.

Dr. Juha Koskimaki and colleagues at the University of Tampere in Finland report the findings in the American Journal of Medicine. The study included 989 men who were between the ages of 55 and 75 at the outset.

Overall, those who said they had sex less than once per week were twice as likely to develop ED over the next five years as men who had sex at least once a week. Furthermore, compared with men who had sex three or more times per week, their ED risk was increased nearly four-fold.

A number of factors contribute to ED development, many of which could also affect a man’s sexually activity — such as age, diabetes and heart disease. However, after taking account of those factors, sexual activity itself remained linked to ED risk, Koskimaki’s team found.

It may be a matter of “use it or lose it,” according to the researchers. Just as exercise boosts physical fitness, they note, regular sexual activity may help a man preserve his erectile function.

ED occurs when there are problems with blood flow to the penis. Regular sexual activity, Koskimaki’s team writes, may help maintain healthy blood vessel function in the erectile tissue.

Not to mention that some women are insufferable bitches who withhold sex for fun.

Even though my gut reaction is to believe this, the methodology still makes me wonder. “[T]hose who were regularly having sex at the start of the study” were more likely to be having sex at the end.

It seems like a chicken-and-egg question. Aren’t guys who are not having regular sex at the start actually.. Not having regular sex? In other words, they are already experiencing ED; it’s odd to think that they would improve over the course of the study.

Totally agree.

Another point: if “erectile hability” is associated to how often we use this hability (just like pointed by the research), maybe two good ways to prevent ED are masturbation and edging.

Indeed, some members have reported some benefits of edging, such as prevent or even cure ED, right?

The article/research says ‘having sex’, but I’m sure just getting regular erections will help guys to get regular erections.

It’s a bit like saying ‘running races’ will keep you able to run, instead of just saying going for a run regularly will keep you able to run.

Yeah it’s pretty much just having a regular erection. I’ve heard of young men who have had ED for whatever reason and down the line they notice they’re penis is smaller. I think that actually might be the purpose of those few erections we get throughout the night even if we are not horny. Just our bodies making sure everything stays functional. I doubt that sex in general will help if its something physically going on with the body that’s causing the ED obviously.

If you get horny really horny your either going to jack off or have sex. In my opinion I think how often you get horny is the best indicator of what is really going on inside your body and mind, just a thought.

I never understood women like this.. And I am a woman.. It’s so sad when they do that. I can understand if you are really ill (flu, cold, food poisoning, surgery, after giving birth, etc).. Or if a woman is menstruating.. Having orgasms while on your period can actually make your cramps worse.. :/ So those things I can understand— and vice versa.. If the woman was feeling randy, but the guy was ill & couldn’t perform.. That’s how it goes sometimes.. But to just flat out deny sex from your partner for your own selfish reasons?. I don’t for the life of me understand that. If you feel like you have to do that to them, why be with them? Y’know?. Unless you have some weird control issue.. Then you just need to get that sorted out & pull your head out of your butt. Seriously. I feel bad for guys who have women like that.. I just want to wring those women’s necks! >.< Especially the married ones!! Oh that just infuriates me to no end!! How can you deny someone you’re supposed to love?! GRRR!!

You know, you’re right.. I didn’t masturbate for a really long time once.. And I woke up in the middle of an orgasm & it freaked me smooth out. I was looking around, like wondering if someone was there, because I could have sworn I felt something moving inside of me.. LOL I was like “oh my gosh! Incubi must really exist!” LOL.. So being really startled by the experience, I hopped online & emailed a sex expert & she wrote me back & said it was not uncommon for women to have that happen to them if they haven’t had sex or masturbated in a while.. So women get “wet dreams,” too. I didn’t know that.. When you deny yourself, your body ends up doing things automatically, just like breathing! XD It was a really awkward sensation, though. I felt like I had been taken advantage of.. And I guess I was.. By myself. >.> It was just so weird.

Have any of you guys ever woken up in the middle of an orgasm at night?. Lol If so, it had to have been weird, right?.
