Kegels may prevent incontinence.

Kegels may prevent incontinence.

I may be wrong but I always believed that doing BC/PC kegels may reduce, or eliminate incontinence of bowel and bladder.
Many years I worked with patients in the home or in hospitals the most embarrassing issue for these elderly folks is incontinence. Especially painful for the ones that are fully cognitive.

I’m asking for other opinions Do you agree with me on this?

Kegels can help with incontinence in women who have had children. That’s why they were developed. I’m not sure they do much for incontinent men.

It is a theory my Anatomy teacher had. I’m thinking it may actually do some good. The muscles of the pelvic floor weaken as we age. This may actually keep people out of convalescent homes longer.

Kegels can do some good for urinary incontinence. We learn to do them as children when we become potty trained, as they call it. But it’s a stretch to assume that old folks can avoid nursing homes because they become incontinent, for which God invented Depends.

The majority are sent to care facilities because they can no longer feed, bathe, dress themselves, or they become immobile, or their families feel they can no longer cope with whatever obligations old people cause them when the old folks do lose various functions, including communication.

When I was a kid (in the just-post dinosaur era :) ) families found ways to care for their old and infirm at home. “Nursing homes” were few and far between, and were dedicated to short-term rehab, only, from serious health events. You usually ended up back home, with your family.

Not now, so much.

And, of course, we have the issue of global warming. Not so easy to take Gramma out in the snow and leave her there to meet her maker when frozen, nearly solid.

Among some societal changes that are not so good is the issue of how to care for our old and infirm. Not many politicians are paying attention to this problem, even with a fast-growing population of folks who face a changed life in a changed system.

Sorry for the little rant, but you gave me an opening I could not resist.

Yes, Kegels can possibly forestall your peeing in your pants. But sometimes other things are going on that make peeing in your pants inevitable. Thank God that when I peed in mine in a drug store parking lot years ago, walking toward picking up the medication that would help my problem then, I was not put in a home. We don’t get real cold weather here, either, so that, thankfully, was not an option.

Oh that is so sad Advocet, your not that old are you. And you can rant on this thread all you want makes it interesting.
So must try to enforce the abilities of older people because there the one’s who are going to have to go to work to keep this nation a float.

40 is the new 20
60 the new 40
80 the new 60
100 the new 80.
We are starting to live longer.

I’m thinking of staring a new project hand out condoms to high school kids and college students. And get them all on a good kegel program, it might just work.
It certainly helps with ED.

I can more or less confirm this for bladder issues. I ended up going to the Enuresis Center when I was 12 or so (they help getting over bed wetting).

The thing that helped me the most was learning to kegel (BC muscle) and doing it frequently. I also had to drink a liter of water and hold it as long as I could. It made it so I could hold fluids as long as I wanted to. Eventually I could drink as much as I wanted and hold it as long as I wanted to.

They also had treatments that involved trying to change your sleep pattern, but I do not think that helped me at all. They would attach two wires to your briefs that would trigger a buzzer as soon as your underwear got damp. Then mom would take you to a cold shower to make sure you were awake and ask stupid questions. IMO that was a complete waste of time and only made me cranky.

I guess so, poor dude.
I was a bed wetter until age 14, that sucks! Peanut butter before bedtime cured me of that. I would eat a peanut butter sandwich.
