Facial hair Loss

Hello,

Of late I have been experiencing hair loss of the beard(Alopecia Barbae) and would like to hear from any other members who have been through/are currently in the same boat?
Mine hasn’t taken the usual form of dime/penny sized patches, rather small patches all around my chin and underneath.

Jack

I split the other thread so you would have a better chance of getting an answer, I wish I had some advice for you:) .

When a member asks for some help. Particularly with a medical problem The last thing he wants is smart comments, Can you refrain from these please.

Thanks,

Can’t help with advice I’m afraid except to try a Google search,. There is an article on the BBC Site which seems fairly comprehensive.

I have been researching via articles and forums since this began to occur a couple of weeks back, but what I have noted is that there isn’t the flood of information specifically about Alopecia Barbae I expected.

Due to nigh-on everybody here being male I thought it would be worth a post to see if anybody here could help/advise. Hopefully somebody will turn up.

I have an appointment with a Dermatologist lined up for mid August, but from past experience with various Derms(for different problems) I don’t hold too much stock in them. Plus its NHS.

Thanks.

I’m with you on the NHS I have an allergy to local anaesthetics. And I need a wisdom tooth out. Now I have to go for allergy testing. I know from past experience they will find nothing. .

Anyway. You probably have tried all these but. Have you looked at what you are eating and drinking. Any change in diet or deodorants etc. which might be causing the problem.

Might be worth a good look at what you have been consuming and using.

Again from past experience. Years ago I was seriously ill and losing weight. I got down to about 9 stone before I found what is was. It was a leak in the car heater and I was being poisoned by antifreeze.

So it is really worth looking at your complete lifestyle and questioning everything.

Good luck! And hope that helps.

Jack,

I had something similar happen a few years back. A small area around my jaw and two circles smaller than a dime on my head lost all the hair. Not a big deal for me since I have been shaving my head for over a dozen years. Anyway, everything returned to normal in a few months. BTW, I asked my Primary Care Physician (who, incidentally, sufferes from full blown Alopecia) after it had returned what I could or should do. He told me if there was anything to do he would have done it. So it either does or doesn’t come back.

My beard was always patchy. In theory, Minoxidil may work or one of those types of products. I bought it and never really was strict with applying it.

Also in theory, Saw Palmetto might be of some help.

For the truly exotic, TCM could be an option. TCM is traditional Chinese Medicine which acupuncture sits under as a subsystem. Herbal remedies could hold promise, which is another subsystem of TCM.

Thank you for the effort in posting all these links, twatteaser. I will leaf through them when my internet connection stabilizes.

My son has alopecia areata on his head and the dermatologist has prescribed two medicines. One is Aldara cream, and the other is fluocinonide in liquid form. The doctor asked us to apply both twice per day. It seems that all of the old bald patches have filled in with hair, but there are still new patches forming. This has been going on for about 8 months now, and we have been treating it for 4-5 months.
