You and me both buddy. I was reading your experience with DMSO from ‘04 earlier today as a matter of fact. It’s on the list of upcoming experiements.

DMSO is fantastic stuff in terms of effectiveness, but my bet is that your SO will neglect you for a day or two when you do. Not matter how pure you make the stuff, as soon as it reacts with your body it will start to smell less than good. It’s not just a matter of purity, but more the chemical reaction that makes it so effective.

I’ve got a couple of bottles here that if I could be sure I wouldn’t see anyone for a week or so, I’d use it in excess every day. In itself it is very useful, with additives it’s even better. If you consider flying ants to be a bad thing, it’s pretty much the opposite of that, but still bad. MSM is a poor second cousin, but without any of the sides.

DMSO can be used as either the carrier or as the penetration enhancer. It’s mechanism of action isn’t exactly known but it is believed to affect lipid layers and also the structure of cells. It is amphiphillic which allows it to penetrate deep into the skin so it can build up in subcutaenous tissues. DMSO is also known for its foul smell, which is supposedly the result of an impurity bismethylthiomethane. DMSO being a sulfoxide will break down in the body to sulfur which can result in a garlic odor. This garlic odor would emit from your pores especially in the armpits and also causes bad breath. I wouldn’t use more than 20% of it in a solution though 10% should suffice. The amount that would be used in this application shouldn’t cause too much of an issue with smell, at least the breaking down in sulfur. Bismethylthiomethane shouldn’t be present in USP grade DMSO but then it becomes prohibitively expensive. D-limonene will cover the smell with a pleasant citrus scent. It also acts as an emulsifier with the effective ratio being 3% of the soultion.
