Verapamil and Viagra

Verapamil and Viagra

Hey guys, although I don’t suffer from ED, I generally have nerve related issues when I’m with new women. I’m going to be having dinner this evening with a new girl and based on everything leading up to this there is about 110% chance she’s going to want to have sex by the end of the night. Because I tend to get nervous with new women, the first couple goes I like to take a small amount of viagra which for some reason clears up all the issues in my head and lets me enjoy myself. I recently started Verapamil as a blood pressure medication and I’m worried about having it interact with viagra.

My questions are: is that a safe combination of drugs? Does anyone have a suggestion as to the amount of viagra I should stay under while on Verapamil? Any other suggestions or recommendations ?

Thanks,

House

Currently (as of 04/3/09): 8.50" BPEL, 7.6" NBPEL, 5.7"EG, (5.5"-7" varying) FL, 4.75" FG, Height: 6'1", Weight: 175 lbs. (final semester of Computer Science > Gym :( )

Goals (in the next 6 months): 8.60" BPEL, 7.8" NBPEL, 6" EG, 7" FL, 5" FG, (still hopefully 6'1"), Weight: 200 lbs.

I’ve tried a number of B/P meds along with Viagra, though not Verapamil. Though drugs both lower B/P; Viagra does not by very much. I’ve not had a problem using V.

House, you would need to ask your doctor about dose adjustments. However, verapamil is known to be an inhibitor of an enzyme called CYP450 3A4, which is what the body uses to remove a wide variety of medications from the body. The enzyme metabolizes the drugs, which breaks them down.

Viagra is one of the medications that is metabolized by 3A4, so by inhibiting 3A4, verapamil would increase serum levels of viagra, and this suggests taking a smaller dose of viagra to compensate for this effect. I don’t know by how much, but in any case the general rule is to take as little as you can and still have a good effect. There’s no real benefit to taking more anyway. So maybe you should experiment, beginning at maybe 25mg, and just see how little you can get away with and still have it work.

But I should also say that verapamil may also inhibit the metabolism of estrogens, which is generally not a good thing for men because it increases estrogen levels and reduces testosterone levels.

I’m curious about the choice of verapamil for blood pressure. It is one of the original CCBs, but there are newer ones that seem to work better, such as Norvasc, without some of the downsides. Do you know why your doctor picked that drug in particular?

Thanks for the information guys, I probably should have specified more. I suffer from regular migraines, and due to simultaneously having somewhat high blood pressure, my doctor prescribed Verapamil in order to take care of the migraines and potentially help with the high blood pressure despite the fact that it wasn’t the exact reason it was prescribed.

I can verify that although I was tentative on the dosage, the Viagra didn’t seem to have any significant conflict with the Verapamil. I used 50 mg generic Viagra with the Verapamil (Which I can’t remember the dosage of at this moment, but I know it’s not too high).

Hope that clears up any confusion,

House

I would check this in with a doctor before I try it.
