There are two types of 5 alpha-reductase (AR), type1 and type 2, that act as a catalyst in converting testosterone into DHT.
Propecia is a 5AR inhibitor, but only effectively inhibits type 2. It has no known effect on type 1. Finasteride works by inhibiting the type 2 5alpha-reductase enzyme that is responsible for converting testosterone to DHT. Type 2 is mostly responsible for damage to hair follicles but Type 1 may also be responsible, it is not know exactly yet what is going on. Propecia inhibits
65% SERUM DHT AND 38% SCALP DHT AT THE STANDARD 1MG. DOSE. At .5mg.’s it is even lower.
If you take Propecia in my opinion you got enough DHT flowing where it counts. I think it is safe. I’ve been taking it for six months with no side effects.
I know everybody’s different but I have not encountered any negative side effects. Propecia inhibits Type 2 5AR by 65% blood work serum. So you still have about 35% type 2 5AR left.
Type 1 5AR is not even effected. From what I read Type 1 5AR is found in genital tissues. So I think Propecia users are in the clear, hopefully.
As far as DHTs role in bodybuilding, testosterone is the active androgen in muscle. Skeletal muscle is unique from other androgen dependent tissues in the body. It actually contains little or no 5-AR,
So little or no DHT is actually formed in the muscle. In addition to this, any DHT that is formed, or that is already present in the blood and travels to the muscle, is quickly deactivated by an enzyme called 3alpha-hydroxysteroid reductase (3a-HSD). So as far as muscle goes, testosterone is the primary active androgen.
Unfortunately, DHT is still important for the full performance enhancement effects from testosterone. What I mean is DHT’s effect on the central nervous system, which lead to increased neurological efficiency
(Strength) and increased resistance to the physical stress weights put on the body. Remember, Propecia 1mg. Still gives you type 1 5AR DHT to work with plus 35% of type 2.
I strength train 5 days a week and I still am making great gains on the Propecia, so I have not been worrying about propecias effect on muscle but have been worrying a little on the penis. I’m investing alot of time pulling my prick, I really hope this works.
