P450 System / Removing Estrogen

Everyone on this forum needs to read this book:
THE TESTOSTERONE SYNDROME (Eugene Shippen, M.D.)
Excerpt:

…P450 system—-a primary processing system that eliminates chemicals, hormones, drugs, and metabolic waste products from the body. AMONG ITS MANY DUTIES IS THE TASK OF EXCRETING EXCESS ESTROGEN FROM THE BODY….a wide vareity of factors can impair [and/or accelerate] this system:

Factors that INHIBIT this system:
high-dose vitamin E, grapefruit, alcohol, antiacids, ibuprofin, acetaminophen, aspirin, ketoconazole, lovastatin……….

Factors that ACCELERATE this system:
high-dose vitamin C, Vitamin K, niacin, soy products, vegetarian diets, cruciferous vegetables, (broccoli, cauliflower), shellfish (oysters), resveratrol (grape skin compound)

What are these two, ketoconazole & lovastatin?

I know Lewd Ferrigno personally.

I thought soy products increased ESTROGEN

I haven't failed, I've found 10,000 ways that don't work. Thomas Edison (1847-1931)

Ketoconazole is an antifungal agent and lovastatin is used to lower cholesterol levels.

I don’t know why Shippen would say alcohol “inhibits” the liver enzyme cytochrome P450 since alcohol is one of the well known inducers of this system. People who drink a lot tend to have this enzyme readily available to metabolize the liquor.

In addition, the blood pressure drugs Diltiazem and Verapamil are also suspect in suppressing Cytochrome P450. Other calcium channel blockers may therefore be a better choice. I’m doing a test of that right now - switching from diltiazem to felodipine. Will run estrogen saliva test in about six weeks.

Ketoconazole I believe is an antibiotic, and lovastatin is used to lower cholesterol.

I think we’ve just begun to make up the list of drugs that raise estrogen levels because of the P450 effect. The majority of all prescription drugs are in fact metabolized (broken down) and removed from the body by the P450 system, so it’s not surprising that some of them will also inhibit that system.

Food-wise the big no-no appears to be grapefruit juice (but orange juice is ok).

THE SOY ANSWER:
“SOY” will have about 1/500th the effect that estrogen would have had on any given receptor.
