Sorry for the double post I was unable to edit and add to my last post.

Some thing I read at CNN.com

In its study, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at 2.4 billion drugs prescribed in visits to doctors and hospitals in 2005. Of those, 118 million were for antidepressants.

Adult use of antidepressants almost tripled between the periods 1988-1994 and 1999-2000.

I find it amusing that this jump also corresponds with the increase of obesity.

Check out this link to see the increase in obesity over the last 20 years.

I am not saying this is the only factor in the increase of depression and anxiety but I believe it to be one of the main culprits of over-prescribing these meds to people who suffer from something else.

I ditto that recommendation. I like the overall book and natural remedies, but I especially like how he attempts to redefine our approach to psychological disorder. Psychology today treats every idiosyncrasy as a disorder, and every disorder as one huge, general problem; Lesser tries to explain how these idiosyncrasies can be spun in a positive way with a healthy — and specialized to your character — diet. Give the book a shot, it’s worth a read.

Going for 6 inches of girth, wish me luck.

ThunderSS has a great point, Exercise! This helped me with my shit concerning Nuerontin, Nuerontin made me suicidal and psychotic. Nuerontin made me rotten. Weaned myself off that shit right after joining Thunders place over 4 years ago.

Technically, we all are. ;) I used to try and figure this shit from internet posts scattered all over. All it did was waste my time, money, and slowed my recovery. Kind of like learning US history from the scribblings of 5 people on a dozen cocktail napkins, you wind up missing a lot. Get a good cornerstone and build from like those books.

Your basic topical point is illustrated with documentation in both those books. So I am not refuting what you said.

Kazoo, I assume you read his book as well? What did you test as? Guess what I got out of the 6?

I scored Dreamer, with a high score in a Warrior, Lover and Guardian, as well. I would be dollars to donuts that you scored Dreamer, with a possible Stoic leaning. Am I right?

Most doctors fail to ask whether the depressed subject is eating healthy and exercising everyday which is very important to people with anxiety and depression issues.

I always thought talk therapy should be the first step in treating any form of depression or anxiety.

I was given anti depressants when I became ill. My GP had me on Citalopram, then they moved me to Prozac graduallay up to 60mg. TURNS OUT I wasn’t depressed,I was psychotic. 2 years later I’m a diagnosed schizophrenic and on anti-phycotics.. What a joke. They had no idea what was wrong with me they just threw me some pills to take, and I’m telling you now it set me back years how those things messed me up. I advise anyone who is depressed not to take tablets it only makes things worse. I think exercise ,eating healthy ,and not drinking/taking drugs is the best healer. Whatever problem you have, give it time and things should sort themselves out.

I took an SSRI in the past and it was extremely helpful for me. I had no side effects at all. It’s all in how they are used and your personal response to the med. I’m in a rush, but to address your question aboutOmegao-3 and serotonin/dopamine, here a pubmed link:

Run a search and you will surely find more studies/articles.

Hey suziesun12 hows it going

Thats good that they did work for you,I hope that you are better now. I’m sure that there are alot of people out there that get affected by them the same way,but alot of people get worse on them. I don’t think that doctors should be allowed to take that gamble with peoples health. I suppose it does depend on the type of drug they perscribe you, and on the individual. Peace

So why are you taking anti-psychotic meds today then?

Yeah, somebody with a broken leg should just let it be and let time heal it.

Because anti-phycotis prevent me from hallucinating and having delusions,in turn they just make me normal. Anti depressants don’t make you happy do they, in fact they just make it worse and you can end up suicidal or have increased anxiety. When I took anti-depressants I felt emotionally numb,I didnt feel happy, sad, nothing.no offence how can you compare it to a broken leg ,I think it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Anti depressents don’t deal with the root causes of the depression, councelling and talking therapy does. Anti-depressants just cover the issues up,sweeping them under the rug. Only with time and understanding can you resolve this type of issue. You could say that with being schizophrenic, but I need the tablets to determine what is reality and what isnt, only by doing that can I then deal with the problem for example doing CBT theraphy.

Yeah, well a lot of people - including me - have had a hell of a lot of help from SSRI’s that time, exercise and talk weren’t able to give.

My point with the broken leg is that a lot of people take a rather cavalier attitude towards depression (and mental health) - “Oh, snap out of it, will you?” And it won’t heal itself any better (or straighter) than an untended broken leg.

In your case, you don’t know how anti-depressants work on someone depressed, do you? Your problem was something else. Sure, insulin isn’t the right medicine for broken legs. Doesn’t mean that insulin isn’t useful for a diabetic - not all diabetes can be handled with diet alone. For someone with serious depression, there is no discussion - SSRI’s have a use.

First of all I’m not being hostile towards you mate and I don’t want it to seem that way. If you look into the symptoms of schzophrenia youll find there are positive and negative symptoms.. The negative symptoms are basically like depression and thats why the two sometimes get confused. I don’t see it that way at all , I totally understand where your coming from and the term ” snap out of it” applies to me to. Why did they help you then? Couldn’t that have been achieved by counceling alone. Exercise, healthy diet etc
