Minoxidil on the penis

Sorry if this has been discussed many times before but the search function isn’t working for me. What would happen if I applied Minoxidil to my penis, as from what I understand it works my increasing blood circulation to the scalp. Would this not do the same for my penis? Would hair grow on my penis if I did this, even though there are no follicles (not including pubic area). If this does work than surely it must aid PE in a similar way to Kegels.

This is how they thought it worked originally. Now they say it causes a hormonal stimulation of the follicle (prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase-1). Other drugs which are known to be vasodilators do not cause hair to grow when applied to the scalp.

Pubic, scrotal, penile hair may respond to that drug by growing. But it wouldn’t make your dick bigger.

Kegels improve a specific muscle that is used during ejaculation and which plays a part in erection strength. Kegels do not make your dick grow. They are an adjunct to PE, but are not considered to be something that increases penile length or girth. Applying a hair-growth drug to the skin of the penis is quite a different thing.

I use Minoxidil on my head and so far my head hasn’t grown

Don’t even think about it.

I’m laughing pretty hard, I can just visualize the result, but no chick wants to suck a hairy dick.

What would probably happen is that the chick would be eventually sucking on a very limp one. And there wouldn’t even be time for hair to grow.

Or your girl starts to look like Yosamete Sam.

Strange that this post is here, since I was pondering this very idea. Minoxidil HAS been used as a topical erection enhancing agent in clinical trials with success, seeing that it is a very strong vasodilator. The other unique attribute about Minoxidil is that it MAY aid in tissue growth, as there is more evidence that it increases local growth factors such as IGF, VEGF, etc. There is even a medical report of a person taking a large dose of minoxidil orally (it is used for hypertension) and developing pseudo-acromegaly. Acromegaly is a condition where the soft tissues grow, generally related to excess growth hormone secretion from a pituitary tumor. Minoxidil is not causing hyper-secretion of growth hormone, but obviously causing tissue growth from some other mechanism, probably from increase in autocrine growth factors stated above.

Topical application would be the safest mode seeing that one does not want the systemic effects of minoxidil: hyPOtension, reflexive tachychardia, and the transdermal route would minimize this potential. The addition of a strong androgen may even aid in penile growth, activating androgen receptors along with other growth factors.

Transcutaneous minoxidil in the treatment of erectile dysfunctions in spinal cord injured men.
Beretta G, Saltarelli O, Marzotto M, Zanollo A, Re B.
Unita di Andrologia, Ospedale G. Fornaroli Magenta, Milano.

We have tested the erectile effect of a topical applied drug (Minoxidil) in 15 spinal cord injured men. Minoxidil exerts a direct relaxant effect on arterial smooth muscles. This topical vasodilatory agent (1 ml of a 2% solution) was applied on the skin of the penile shaft. Increases in diameter and rigidity were measured with the RigiScan device (Dacomed Minneapolis, Minnesota). A total of 4 paraplegic men with a complete dorsal level lesion reported a positive erectile response. 3 of these 4 patients preferred to continue with this noninvasive treatment compared to prostaglandin E1 intracavernous injections. In our study no side effects were emerged and minoxidil proved to be well tolerated at the cutaneous level of the penis. Our results indicate that this treatment should be tested in spinal cord injured men before a invasive therapy is initiated.

Could someone please rub some Rogaine on their dick and post what happened.

Here are the abstracts. The first sheds light on the possible mechanism of the second abstract.

[Hair growth effect of minoxidil]

[Article in Japanese]

Otomo S.

Pharmacological Evaluation Laboratory, Taisho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., 403, Yoshino-cho 1-chome, Saitama-shi, Saitama 330-8530, Japan.

The length and size of hair are depend on the anagen term in it’s hair cycle. It has been reported that the some cell growth factors, such as VEGF, FGF-5S, IGF-1 and KGF, induce the proliferation of cells in the matrix, dermal papilla and dermal papillary vascular system and increase the amount of extra cellular matrix in dermal papilla and then maintain follicles in the anagen phase. On the other hand, negative factors, like FGF-5, thrombospondin, or still unknown ones, terminate the anagen phase. If the negative factors become dominant against cell proliferation factors according to fulfilling some time set by the biological clock for hair follicles, TGF beta induced in the matrix tissues evokes apoptosis of matrix cells and shifts the follicles from anagen to catagen. Androgenetic alopecia is caused by miniaturizing of hair follicles located in the frontal or crown part of scalp and are hereditarily more sensitive to androgen. In their hair cycles, the androgen shortens the anagen phase of follicles and shifts them to the catagen phase earlier than usual. The mode of action of hair growth effect of minoxidil is not completely elucidated, but the most plausible explanation proposed here is that minoxidil works as a sulfonylurea receptor (SUR) activator and prolongs the anagen phase of hair follicles in the following manner: minoxidil (1) induces cell growth factors such as VEGF, HGF, IGF-1 and potentiates HGF and IGF-1 actions by the activation of uncoupled SUR on the plasma membrane of dermal papilla cells, (2) inhibits of TGF beta induced apoptosis of hair matrix cells by opening the Kir 6.0 channel pore coupled with SUR on the mitochondrial inner membrane, and (3) dilates hair follicle arteries and increases blood flow in dermal papilla by opening the Kir 6.0 channel pore coupled with SUR on the plasma membrane of vascular smooth muscle cells.

Pseudoacromegaly induced by the long-term use of minoxidil.

Nguyen KH, Marks JG Jr.

Department of Dermatology, Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Hershey, Pennsylvania, USA.

Acromegaly is an endocrine disorder caused by chronic excessive growth hormone secretion from the anterior pituitary gland. Significant disfiguring changes occur as a result of bone, cartilage, and soft tissue hypertrophy, including the thickening of the skin, coarsening of facial features, and cutis verticis gyrata. Pseudoacromegaly, on the other hand, is the presence of similar acromegaloid features in the absence of elevated growth hormone or insulin-like growth factor levels. We present a patient with pseudoacromegaly that resulted from the long-term use of minoxidil at an unusually high dose. This is the first case report of pseudoacromegaly as a side effect of minoxidil use.

Minoxidil versus nitroglycerin: a prospective double-blind controlled trial in transcutaneous erection facilitation for organic impotence.

Cavallini G.

Department of Urology, Hospital of Adria, Veneto, Italy.

A new type of topically applied drug (minoxidil) to facilitate erection is presented. Minoxidil acts directly on arterial smooth muscles via relaxation. This drug (1 ml. Of a 2% solution) was studied under strict laboratory conditions in a double-blind controlled trial on 33 patients (4 with neurogenic plus arterial, 10 with neurogenic and 19 with arterial impotence) and compared to placebo and nitroglycerin (2.5 gm. Of a 10% ointment). The application sites were the penile shaft (nitroglycerin) or glans penis (minoxidil and placebo). Increases in diameter and rigidity were measured with the RigiScan device and arterial flow was evaluated by conventional Doppler sonography. Side effects were considered as well. This drug proved to be more active than nitroglycerin and placebo in increasing diameter, rigidity and arterial flow of the penis. The highest activity proved to occur in neurogenically impotent patients. Fewer side effects also were found with minoxidil than with nitroglycerin. For these reasons minoxidil is proposed as a long-term therapeutic agent for organic impotence

Acromegaly, pseudo or otherwise, isn’t a nice way to grow tissue. How would you limit this growth to only the penis?

The last study is 14 years old and I haven’t heard much about minoxidil being used for impotence. Apparently their suggestion for that use wasn’t widely accepted.
