Melatonin Damaging to Sex Organs?

Melatonin Damaging to Sex Organs?

On the news tonight I saw that melatonin is damaging to sex organs! Is this true? I take 3-9mg every single night before bed, and have been doing so for over a year now to sleep.

Here’s the story if you want a little more detail to review:….storyID=7561044

Basically melatonin’s effects are largely unknown. This is preliminary evidence that it may do some damage. There haven’t been enough people taking it for long enough to know anything with certainty.

Personally I would not take melatonin every day, considering how little is known about it and the pineal gland’s function in general, but the risks may be worth it if it’s the only way that you can sleep well.

Isn’t mealtonin also supposed to reduce cortisol levels?

The effect of melatonin on reproductive systems can be summarized by saying that it is anti-gonadotropic. In other words, melatonin inhibits the secretion of the gonadotropic hormones luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone from the anterior pituitary.

That’s not good…

fuck thanks for the heads up people. My daughter takes this stuff occassionally per the recommendation of her doctor.

Tork —

I wouldn’t freak out about “occasional” use. As with other hormones, chronic use is probably most worrisome. Take prednisone (a corticosteroid), for example — it’s a wonderdrug for the short term, but boy, in the long term it REALLY messes up the body.
