Guys,

Do I need the ‘base’ form or the HCL form?

Previously, I have just been using ‘l-arginine’ (no further description) from various UK Healthfood chains.

Get the base form.

I get arginine from kilosports. You want the HCL.

I rest my case.

When I first ordered 18 months ago, I called asking Kilosports the same question. I was told definitely HCL because base is hygroscopic (sic) , i.e., absorbs moisture from the air. True HCL is a little less potent than base.

I guess that’s why my product comes with a desiccant packet in the bottle to keep it dry.

Guys - thanks for your help but I’m still unsure. Why does it being able to absorb moisture from air make it better/worse?

It depends on the supplement. At best it simply means that it needs to be stored properly to stop it clumping or getting sticky. However, some supplements are not very stable in moist air and can lose their structure. I don’t know if L-Arginine is one of them.

My L-arginine pills have always stayed fresh and dry and crisp. I do live in Arizona, but I also keep the top on the bottle and like I said, there is a desiccant pack in the bottle to absorb humidity. It isn’t a problem.

Sorry, I didn’t know you were looking at powder form and not pill. If you are interested in the pills:

I would recommend HCL. You can’t taste it. The L-Arginine base powder has to be one of the worst tasting things on earth.

OK now I’m confused. I am looking at getting some more powder.

The powder I had from Bodybuilding.com - Huge Online Supplement Store & Fitness Community! was 100% Pure L-arginine Powder (free form). This has been fine for me, is this the base or the HCL?

I would guess that free form = base. If it doesn’t taste bad for you, consider yourself lucky. I think that there is a percentage of people (1 in 5 maybe) that can’t taste it.

Excellent. Thanks anon. Yeah it tastes a bit odd but nothing I can’t stand, sometimes it actually tastes nice. Does that make me some kind of supplement perve?

(I still wish they sold L-arginine in the uk as powder :( )
