Kefir?

Kefir is absolutely great; I buy a bottle as a treat when I can. I find the slightly tart taste wonderful though I have never tried to make it.

What is it good for?

Based on this thread I recently have tried Kefir for the first time. I found it at Trader Joes and bought the Strawberry Kefir. I put it on my cereal in the morning in a 50/50 mix of kefir and 1% milk. I thought it was really good. Now, when I don’t have the Kefir, I just mix regular low fat yogurt with milk and put that on my cereal. Yum.

Did you find any Kefir yet?

Do you have a Gristedes, Associated, or Dagostinos in Brooklyn? They carry Kefir, usually a couple of brands of it.

Hope you find it. I’m drinking a Lifeway, low fat Pomegranate Kefir right now. It’s a new flavor and it’s great!!!

Lifeway is Chicago based I believe. My company makes flavors for a lot of their products. While I do not know of any direct benefits of consuming Kefir for PE, I do know that staring at pictures of the CEO will definitely get you hot and bothered. She took over her dad’s company at about 26 and has turned into a big time company. He first started making Kefir in his basement and selling to local markets. She’s in her 30s or 40s now and smoking hot.

Sweet holy crap, this stuff is good! I found some at the local Trader Joe’s (plain) and found that it has the magical ability to make any cereal taste like that-flavored-cereal cheesecake. This has turned my high fiber, old people cereal from a routine to an event. (Kashi Good Friends super-fiber, colon blow with a bit of cinnamon, a spoonful of Splenda brown sugar and a 50/50 mix of Kefir and nonfat milk…it’s like cinnamon and brown sugar pop tart cheesecake - if such a thing were to exist).

Hey buddy. Try some of the flavors on your cereal. It’s great!
I like Kashi also, but whatever it is I either use the blueberry, or strawberry/banana kefir. Sometimes I mix it with skim milk or soy milk,
but mostly just use the kefir alone on the cereal.

I love the slightly tart taste and have to be careful not to eat too much!

Guys, buy kefir, wherever you can get it.

It will be on the shelf at any Eastern European grocery store.
Plenty of them in Brighton Beach, Greenpoint.
Also sold at half price compared to Florida’s Publix.
Plenty of other goodies too. Check out European beers.
$1.5 for ½-liter (roughly 17 oz) 5.5 - 8.2% alc.
I recommend “Pultusk”.

Into a glass container, pour three parts milk and 1 part kefir.
Leave it for 36-48 hours, loosely covered at room temperature.
You will have creamy, smooth kefir, and, perpetual supply of it.

You can culture kefir and yogurt in the same container.
Will turn out a bit more sour but with additional friendly bacteria.

This is the best you can do without original kefir grains.

If you live in NYC, walk to your local bodega/ korean 24/7 grocery and you have even money they’ll stock it.

And it will most likely be LifeWays brand.
CNBC did a full profile of the CEO of the family owned company, how her dad started it and she took over when he passed. I seem to recall that they are now grossing ~USD 40MM per annum- up from next to nothing way back when she took it over.

And she is very bone worthy.
