Benefits of Fish Oil

I take 4 teaspoons of fish and flax oil every day, for months now. I don’t feel any different

but my cholesterol looks good.

One should use caution eating oils that taste bad as the taste can be from rancidity. Polyunsaturated oils such as fish oil are particularly prone to rancidity. The rancidification process includes reactions of oxygen with unsaturated fatty acids to form lipid peroxy radicals, one of which can form hundreds of lipid hydroperoxides by a chain reaction mechanism. Lipid hydroperoxides are unstable; they can produce hydroxylipids some of which are proinflammatory. Worse, peroxylipids can produce molecules including 4-hydroxynonenal and malondialdehyde that are reactive with proteins and DNA. The upshot is that all fish oils are not created equal—much depends on how they are purified, treated and stored—and that it may not be wise to economize on fish oil brand in order to be able to take an exceptionally high dosage. One source that I believe is trustworthy is that manufactured by Cardinove International in Uppsala, Sweden. Their Eskimo-3 naturally stable fish oil is distributed as softgel capsules in the US by Enzymatic Therapy, Inc. In Green Bay WI (www.enzy.com). Lately the bottle labels also mention Prevail (www.prevail.com). I have no commercial ties with Cardinova, Prevail or Enzymatic Therapy. I just use their Eskimo-3 product and have attended a lecture by a Cardinova scientist that I found convincing. Among other things, he said canned sardines are a good omega-3 oil source, whereas larger fish such as adult salmon may also have significant levels of mercury and other heavy metals.

Ulcaster, I wouldn’t even bother with the flax oil. How much EPA and DHA are you getting from the fish oil? Very curious.

Jafar, yes I am, or at least I will be. Hunting for funding right now, have written several protocols and already have a PI.

77 I already got in a huge debate over fish oils, including the rancidity question, but was tarred and feathered. Thanks for carrying on. I will say that mercury shouldn’t be an issue because it is removed during processing to conform to federal standards. But the rancidity is definitely an issue.

Does it taste nastier than that Go-Lightly shit they give you before a GI Surgery/exam?

zaneblue: I am very impressed. I think we are very lucky to have someone like you in our forum. I will definitely try fish oil as you recommended and let you know what the results are.

No flax? Why not?

Fish oil:

EPA 554mg per serving. 2 Servings a day.

DHA 244mg per serving. 2 Servings a day.

How much fish oil is needed to kill a person with? Hypothetically speaking of course.

An inch.

That would be probably at least double what I am taking, and you’d have to hurt the person pretty bad, some sort of deep cut, they might hemorrhage.

Ulcaster, flax oil contains ALA, a precursor to EPA and DHA, a very inefficient precursor. Kind of a waste. You’re a big guy, humor me, try taking triple the fish oil for a month that you are already taking. Which should turn you into a non-stop erection machine, with your testosterone levels. Now there’s a thought, with that bod of yours. ANYHOW, the point is it will probably make you a bit more cheerful and optimistic.

Zane,

thanks for the link. Pretty scary reading, considering all the bad things linked to low levels of EPA / DHA. It seemed to me that neurogenes might be affected positively by Omega3, but they didn’t say much specifically about the hippocampus area.

If I ingest fish oil capsules which are rancid, will I notice it somehow directly. Bad taste, burps, anything.

Or is it not noticable except when I do a random check on the capsules (cut them open and smell them)

When you think about it, it’s almost like American culture has been a huge biological experiment to produce crazy sick stupid people, with high level of transfat intake and omega-6 fatty acids and almost no omega-3, just in the last one hundred years. Low omega-3 fatty acid levels are implicated in just about every “modern” disease known to man, see this link:

And DHA is critical for fetal brain development, for proper brain functioning both intellectually and emotionally. DHA is so important that the human body treats it like currency. Semen is high in DHA levels and it is absorbed through the vaginal walls, and breastmilk is very high in DHA too. Yet the typical American diet not only has no omega-3 fatty acids, it is full of omega-6 fatty acids and transfats that directly interfere with omega-3 fatty acid function, and also cause inflammation, etc.

I doubt that individual capsules would be rancid; certainly you could check one per bottle. It is caused both by bad product going in, and also by exposure to heat and light. Cutting one open is the easiest way to check, it should just smell like cooked fish, not spoiled fish.
