Is L-Arginine causing me sore throats?

Is L-Arginine causing me sore throats?

I don’t know if I should put this post in the Injuries section or Supplements section. Anyway, I’ve been taking GNC’s Arginine 1000mg tablets already for a week with no problems. I take any where from 4-6 tablets a day. A couple days ago I took two tablets in the morning then less than an hour later I developed a severe sore throat. I got a bad throat ache every time I swallow. A day later it dissappeared. Just yesterday I took 1 tablet of Arginine and I got another sore throat! Today it hasn’t dissapperaed. I’ve been taking those sore throat sprays. Is it the Arginine that is causing me throat problems (how is it possible?) or am I just catching a cold in late Spring?

I take the same thing that you are taking w/o incident. I only take 1 at night however.

Perhaps I’ll reduce my dose then.

Its possible you have some kind of herpes related condition thats agravated by L-Arginine. Arginine is known to exacerbate certain herpes symptoms. Seeing as 2 thirds of sexually active adults have been exposed or carry a type of herpes which is largely inert…(I think its type six or somthing). It is known that certain conditions such as weakened immunity can cause the virus to act up. I wouldn’t be suprised if large doses of L-Arginine could also cause flu like symptoms or as in your case a sore throat.

Arginine can make you very thirsty as it seems to need a lot of water to fulfill its function. Try increasing your water intake considerably.

I notice a very dry throat and mouth when I take Arginine. Over the first few days it became quite painful but not now.

MELVIN gave a very good supplier a while ago (Thanks Melvin) :-

It prices out at about £23 per lb. of powder against up to £90 per pound in tablet form!

Isn’t that why you’re supposed to balance it with L-ornithine? (don’t know where I read that).

I’m guessing now!

I THINK the ornithine helps to get the arginine into the system, but the water angle is very necessary. I’ll have a check out tomorrow at this time of night it’s a bit late!

I might have that wrong, it could be L-Lysine. I’ll check tomorrow as like you say, it’s late.

Having searched couldn’t find much

‘Arginine is needed for the production of ornithine’

Couldn’t find a reference of lysine/arginine.

I seem to remember that I read that some shouldn’t be taken together as one will ‘take over’ the aborption process and block the other.

But drinking water anyway won’t hurt the body so It’s worth a try Mike2002

I’ve never heard of L-a causing a sore throat.

Mild diahrrea yes. Farting, yes. But those symptoms disappear with continued use.

I posted about this happening to me in my Personal Routine. I think it has happened to me because I have had chronic tonsil problems ever since I got mono 6 years ago.

But as long as I have been in good health, i.e. not sick, I haven’t had any problems with the swelling/soreness in my throat.

That should have been absorption process!

YES. I have started taking it recently and I have had the shits and this terrible cough. Please be advised that the body will take time to adjust to this new substance. Diarrhea is very likely and be prepared. Good luck to all
