Technical Tips

Viewing Threads

Hopefully everyone is familiar with the View New Posts link on the forum home page. This is the best way to see all the threads posted since the last visit, and can be improved using the forum filter. It can be annoying though: Leave half way through reading the posts and return to the forum later and the list of threads is lost.

One simple solution is to temporarily bookmark the page showing the search results after clicking on View New Posts on the first visit. Though the position in each thread is lost, the list is retained.

Alternatively view posts made in the last day, week or month by bookmarking these links.

In the User Options the threads can be filtered by the forums you have most interest in. If you enable Forum Filtering you will see new links appear on the forum home page. in place of View New Posts. View Filtered New Posts which will produce a list of threads in your selected forums since your last visit and View All New Posts which will bypass the filter showing you all new threads as before. Enabling the filter will also effect the latest threads box on the forum home page.

People often complain about not being able to find threads, its worth checking whether Default Thread View is set to Show all threads in edit options. If you want to see the best threads in a forum, click on the rating colum header. Likewise you can sort by most replies or views. e.g. Main Member forum sorted by rating, replies, views.

Searching

Searching often brings up the best results immediately but it doesn't dig into the individual posts, so if you are search for a specific post or posts embedded deep in threads you need to switch to intensive mode and select show results by posts.

Search options are on the Advanced Search page. You can also limit the forums searched and specify a username. The results can be sorted in various ways.

This is a stemming search engine so jelq, jelqing and jelqed are effectively the same. Multi word searches rate higher if more of the words are present but will also show results when words are missing.

Intensive mode is a lot slower. It's possible even that your browser may time out at the first attempt. If this happens just repeat the search and it should be a lot faster.

Formatting Posts

There are a few obvious ways to increase the readability of posts. Simple formatting like paragraphing well can be improved with the use of

 • bold text bold text,
 • italics italics
 • coloring coloring

Word based links are also simple and effective:
Penis Enlargement! Penis Enlargement!

There is a whole page on formatting and another on smilies.

Viewing Thunder's Place at work

In a work situation its often fairly easy for someone to peer over your shoulder. It may be worth considering viewing the forum without avatars as they are often fairly blatant or surprising and will draw the eye of work collegues.

Switch off avatars by going to the User Options and scrolling to Post elements under the thread view options. Signatures often contain PE statistics you can switch these off as well if you find them problematic.

Filtering Out Stuff You Don't Want to See

You may want to avoid certain topics and we've tried to split the forums up to allow you to ignore the things that don't work for you.

The second part of the puzzle is the Forum Filter in your Settings. If you select this and the forums you want to see then you'll see an extra link in your menus called Filtered New Posts which allows you to check for new posts only in the forums you select. You can also select only your filtered forums when you run a forum search under the advanced options.

You can still enter the forums you've filtered out from the home page and you can still check for New Posts in the normal way. You could use this as a NSFW filter.
